is it possible to denie the surcharges if I get confronted with them, not knowing that I had to pay them?
I would probably have to get out at the next station, right? but that is no problem for me, not having a real plan where to go anyway, so would I get problems? as e.g. being taken to the police or something? :D

it really depends on the person who checks your ticket. sometimes they are nice, sometimes they are stressed and in bad mood. ;)

my experience: in northern Europe no problem, in southern Europe it is a problem ... and I also made the experience that sometimes I had to pay a double surcharge - even not doing it willful. ||

i dont think claiming unawareness is the way to go. most of the time the surcharge is pretty small anyway.
