I am trying to buy a ticket at Trenitalia web site and still didn't understand why the english and the italian language pages differ in the timetables to choose from.
I already bought tickets from this site in 2010 and I am sure it wasn't that hard... except when some itineraries where not available to buy online without explanation and the customer service was similarly inefficient.
But now... after many attempts jumping from italian to english and back, and again, and restart...I finally found the way to buy a night train from Venice to Rome.
So the question for this topic is: does anyone know why at the end of the process the two ticketless options are disabled and only the self-service and postal options are available? I want to choose the self-service option, I know I have to collect the real ticket from certain stations, but I need a little more information. Last time I bought I am sure I was sent an email with an e-ticket and that was all, no collection in stations.
I certainly cannot use the help from the website because it is in italian and Google translator sucks.
Any help is welcome.

Hi,
without checking the timetable, I guess it is the night train from Vienna to Rome which stops in Venice around 1am or so?
Since this is a train operated by ÖBB and not Trenitalia this is probably the reason why it is not possible to choose the ticketless options. :os

Actually I need to go from Venice to Naples; I found an option from Venice (23.30 InterCityNotte) to Rome and then another train From Rome to Naples (07.39 Intercity).
The ÖBB site shows the same itinerary but doesn't even let me see the ticket price nor buy it.
Which company operates the InterCityNotte?

OK, I see. ICN are operated by Trenitalia.
I just checked via trenitalia.com and there only the two ticketless options are available... :|

I found this on the Trenitalia website help, I hope the translations is correct:

With the ticket Ticketless you can not access the regional trains and international trains (excluding trains Italy - Switzerland for domestic routes in the country) or you will be regularized as without a ticket.
Does this apply to the trains that serve the itinerary I want (InterCityNotte and InterCity)?

No, ICN (InterCity Notte) are domestic services.

Hi
Trainitalia is the national railway company of Italy running this service. If you want to travel by train, you will have to use it.

My problem is solved: it happens that the second part of the total trip Venice-Naples I wanted to buy (Rome to Naples) is a regional train (IC 723), so the ticket-less options are disabled when you buy it together with another kind of train. If you make two separate reservations the problem disappears.
I found the answer: you won't be offered the ticket-less option if any part of your journey is by a regional train - so in this case you can split the booking and book the long distance train separately
The question that remains is: how do I know that a train is regional or whatever classification they have?????? Again, Trenitalia help and customer service suck.

Humm...IC (InterCity) is not a regional train. But anyway, if that helped... :)
Regional trains are either R (Regionale) or RV (Regionale Veloce).

I seem to have the same exact problem. I'm trying to book the genova - rome night train but Trenitalia.com won't give the chance to select it. Any help? :|

Hi,
what exactly is the problem? When do you want to travel?
I can select the train for a date next week - only ticketless is not available.

Im trying to travel from Monaco to Rome on the 24th of July. The idea is to arrive to Monaco from Nize early in the morning, then travel to Ventimiglia to catch the night train (around 7pm) and arrive Rome at 6am. The thing is, it doesn't seem to be any way to book that now. I was wondering if I'll be able to do that in a near future.

Hi.
There is no direct night train from Ventimiglia to Rome.
First you have to travel by local/regional train to Genova (or if you like to Torino) and get there on the night train.
1 - there is the change in the European train schedules on the 2nd weekend of June. The Italians are often late to update their new schedules so it might take some time until travel dates (and also tickets) are available for travel days after this date.
2 - the ticket Monaco to Ventimiglia is available directly in Monaco at the station. Use the inexpensive local TER service.
3 - next step is to purchase the ticket for the local/regional train Ventimiglia to Genova (or Torino).
4 - and the final step, the ticket for the night train from Genova (or Torino) to Rome.
Tickets are also available via: [ux]https://rail.shop/omio[/ux]
But like I said, I think you will have to wait at least until end of May to get the tickets for this connection.

Thanks a lot! I knew I would have to take more than a train to go to Rome but it didn't let buy any of them! Guess I will have to wait about a month, then.
