Hi, we (my girlfriend and I) are travelling over Eastern Europe for a month in June………We are currently planning the route and find ourselves in Plovdiv (Bulgaria), wanting to get to Lake Ohrid (Macedonia). Is there a better route than going to Sofia? We are travelling to Plovdiv FROM Sofia and iddeally dont want to go back there, could anyone please advise on any possible routes from Plovdiv to Ohrid? bus or train. Direct would be better, as we dont really want to do Skopje, but is its absolutly nessesary then we will have no choice.

Hej.
If you want to go by train, you cannot avoid going via Sofia - Dimitovgrad - Nis - Skopje. From Skpje, go to Bitola, from where you would have to go to Lake Ohrid by bus. Alternatively you can already take a bus from Skopje, from where buses run more frequently than from Bitola.
Anyway, I do not no about bus connections however there definitely should be buses at least from Sofia to Skopje. But, as you might suspect since we are into travelling by train I would recommend to go by train...it would be a rather adventurous route but I think you might like it. :)

PS: Have a look at the railway map here to get an idea of the route :arr: https://rail.cc/en/train-ticket-railmap-of-europe

BUS Sofia-Skopje is both cheaper, much quicker and much more frequent as train-just look a map and see why. About 4-6 /seasonal there-simply turn up at Sof and buy ticket for next bus out-there are different companies-so do not be put off if nr 1 is full or leaves much later-search on. in main summertime some of these buses run onward to Ohrid. Private rooms are the best and cheapest option to stay there-do not worry about bookings and all that western idee-fixed nonsense: just turn up and see.
