I'm planning a trip in Norway this summer, and I've figured pretty much everything out about the train system aside from this: I am an American who will be travelling with my Danish friend, so I will have a Eurail pass and she will have the Interail pass. At least, that's what I've gathered so far.
The problem I'm having is that when I go to a website like raileur*pe, I can only make the required seat reservations for either myself or my friend's itinerary, as solo travelers, because we have different types of passes.
I guess I have two questions:
1) Is it possible to reserve seats on norwegian trains for 2 people with different kinds of passes at the same time?
2) Does it even matter? Would we still be able to sit next to each other if we reserve our seats at separate times?
Thanks!

Hi Zoe.
The fact is, you do not need any reservations when travelling on the network of NSB (Norwegian Railway). You will always be able to enter a train even if it is full - then you would have to stand but you can reach your destination. It is also possible to ask the conductor for free seats (they have a list that shows which seats are reserved and from where to where).
If you want to have a seat guaranteed you can of course also get a reservation. But it is usually sufficient to do so while you are in Norway. While we were there in August 2010 it was no problem to get reservations for trains on the day. :)

PS: If you havent bought your InterRail/EuRail passes yet we would be happy if you would like to support railcc and order via our partner. Thank you. :)

Okay great, that's a load off my mind! I'm happy that even if the seats get booked up (which it sounds like they don't usually) we can still get on board with our passes.
Two of the trains we are taking are overnight, though, so it'd probably be best if we reserved seats, correct? If we do decide to make reservations, can we pick any seat when we get on board, or are we assigned one?

Hi.
If you get a reservation for a train (night or day train), you will get the number of the car and the number of the seat which is your own for the journey. Enter relaxed and just sit down. :)
If you want, you can book seats (also for night trains) online here at railcc - it doesn't matters your friend and you have different rail passes. The reservations here in the railcc shop are valid for Interrail AND Eurail:

But like Flow already said, you will be fine booking reservations directly in Norway at a train station!
