Hi.
So lets find your perfect route... :)
How many days you want to spent in total?
And will you fly back to the UK from Italy - or back by train?

Example:
Amsterdam - Berlin - Poznan - Krakow - Prague - Vienna - Budapest - Croatia - Slovenia (Lake Bled) - Venice - Rome

we will have a full month peter. we have no restrictions at all really, but i think the first 3 places are set in stone, amsterdam, berlin, poznan.

i think we would like to make our way back to amsterdam to fly from there so i dont kno what way that will work.

any route at all would be very helpful! i persume rome to amsterdam would be too far and need stop overs

Mmmmh...
If you have one month, think about the Black See (Bulgaria - Varna) and Istanbul. Very interessting trip. :)
And on your way back from Italy to Amsterdam: Switzerland is expensive. But the Alps amazing to make by train.
Stops could be for example Freiburg im Breisgau (city full of students) and Cologne.

Hi,

if you are going to Poznan, you could go to Wolsztyn, this line (as well as the line Wolsztyn to Krzyz and Leszo) is still operated by old steam engines. Quite unique in Europe and if you are there it might be worth considerating. :)
From Rome you could go to Milano, then to Tirano and to Ospizio Bernina. There, on 2250m asl, you could spend the night in the Ospizio and proceed the next day to Freiburg as Peter suggested.
