Hi, two friends and I are looking to go on our first interrailing trip this summer. Probably going on around July 18th, with a 10 travel days in 22 days pass. Very preliminary route would be:

Prague - Vienna - Budapest - Belgrade - Sarajevo - Podgorica - Split.

Cheapest way seems to be to fly out to Prague from London, and then back from Split. Don't really know all that much about this region of Europe, so I've only listed the main cities of the countries we'd be interested in. Just wondering if this seems like a reasonable itinerary, and if anyone knows of any smaller places that might fit in well with the journey/replace some of the capitals? We want a mixture of culture and a bit of nightlife, and it would be great to end up on some nice beaches in Croatia. Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi,

why not going to Prague by train as well? Much more ecological and interesting that by plane! ;)

You could take the Harwich - Hook van Holland ferry, then stay one day in Amsterdam and then with the night train on to Prague - or include Berlin or Dresden on the way.
Anyway, I would go with a 5in10 pass and do the first part of the trip with it. The rest of the trip can be done with regular tickets which will be cheaper, plus you will need some buses which are not included in InterRail. The trip then would look like: Prague - Vienna - Budapest - Belgrade - Podgorica with 5in10 IR ticket (or, if you decide to go to Prague with train only as far as Budapest with InterRail, then regular tickets), then by bus to Sarajevo (the Belgrad - Posgorica trip is much more scenic than the route to Sarajevo, that's why I changed the route), by train via Mostar to Ploce, then finally by bus to Split.

While in Montenegro, head for the coast (Bar or Sutomore are the last stations on the line from Belgrade) instead of Podgorica, or go up the coast to Kotor. On the way from Praha to Wien you could fit in Brno or Cesky Krumlov...like I said above, include Mostar on the way from Sarajevo to Ploce.

If you want to support our work at railcc, purchase your InterRail passes at our partner, thank you! :)

And if you have more questions, just ask. ;)
