Hi

Firstly let me apologise in advance if I have missed this from elsewhere and repeated the question!

I just wanted confirmation as to whether I can only buy night train tickets once I have arrived in the particular country? As I can't get a price online, and I think I have read this in another topic.

I am worried I won't be able to get a reservation with only a couple of days notice our route is pretty much set so hopefully can get the days we want, is there no other way around it?

Our over night trips will be between

Budapest - Belgrade

Belgrade - Saravejo - although I think this is best by bus?

Saravejo - Zagreb

Any advice is much appreciated

Thanks :)

Hi!

In general, you can buy reservations for night trains from abroad as well. Here in Austria for instance it is possible to book almost all night trains in Europe, even night trains to Portugal, in Norway or Poland. Of course there are some exceptions and not every railway can do so but usually you can at least book night trains for neighbouring countries.

Regarding your route you need to know:

Budapest - Belgrad: Possible to get reservations from Austria, Germany,...however it will be a little cheaper to get the reservation in Hungary (or Poland, Czech Republic,...). The train has sleeper, couchette accomodation as well as regular seats...you wont need a reservation for regular seats

Belgrad - Sarajevo: No night train, just one train during the day, no reservation needed. I would go by train...if you have an InterRail ticket, why use the bus? Travelling by train in this area is very interesting, much less hectic and more traditional than in Western Europe. :)

Sarajevo - Zagreb: The night train only has regular seats, so no reservation needed
