hi all
Will be doing a day trip from Interlaken to Zermatt - does anyone know if the part from Visp to Zermatt is free with interrail? I know you can do it with Glacier express, which isn't free, but according to another topic you can do some parts for free using Regional trains (can't really work out how I tell which trains are regional and which are glacier express on DB website)
thanks

Hi Luke,
the route of the Glacier Express is: St Moritz/Davos/Chur - Reichenau-Tamins - Disentis/Mustér - Andermatt - Brig - Visp - Zermatt
On the whole route there are regional trains, however you will have to change several times. The Glacier Express runs through the whole route but requires an extra reservation.
The route belongs to two railway companies: RhB (Rhätische Bahn) from St Moritz/Davos/Chur - Disentis/Mustér and MGB (Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn) from Disentis/Mustér to Zermatt...RhB is fully included in InterRail (apart from the reservations for Glacier Express and Bernina Express which are to be paid separetely), whereas MGB is not included in InterRail. However, if you have an InterRail Youth Pass (<26) you will get 50% discount for travelling on the MGB network. Thus, you would need an extra discounted ticket (14€) for travelling from Visp to Zermatt. Coming from Interlaken the fast option is to go to Spiez and change there for an Intercity in direction of Brig...if you have time I would instead recommend to travel the old route via the Lötschberg summit route (instead of the base tunnel) via Spiez - Goppenstein - Brig.
What is your next destination after Zermatt? If you have time, do the rest of the Glacier Express route as well, going via Andermatt to Graubünden :)

Thanks for replying Flo, we are staying in Grindelwald that night (wanted to spend a day seeing matterhorn) but won't be able to do glacier express unfortunately.

OK...remember that you have to pay the full fare for Interlaken - Grindelwald as the BOB is not included in InterRail.

Yeah that part of it isn't too expensive though - CHF 5.20 each way according to SBB

Oh, I must have been looking at half fare for some reason. at least it won't hurt the wallet as much as a trip to Jungfraujoch :)
