Hi guys
We are travelling from NZ to Amsterdam in June
Ok ,we have no idea what is best to do but here is the plan and i am sure there will be an easy answer!
Train
7th Amsterdam-Cologne
8th Cologne-Heidelburg
9th Heidelburg-Zurich
10th Zurich- Innsbruck
11th Innsbruck -Venice
So, do we just go poin to point or maybe a 3 day Eurail = some point to point? no other train travelling intended at each stop, just a nice cruis down to Italy at leisure.
Many thanks if you respond-it would be reall appreciated
good on ya mate ! :D

Hi.
The thread is fine. :)
It depends. If you know your exact travel dates, you can try to get special offers of the national railway companies.
For the connections to and from Germany: [ux]https://rail.shop/bahn[/ux]
For the ones from and to Austria at www.oebb.at
If you want to stay a bit more flexible, have a stop more or less somewhere on your route, think about an Eurail Select Pass: https://rail.cc/en/eurail-select-pass
It's a bit of calculation ... but just play with the booking engines mentioned above. Tickets are available up to 3 months in advance. And at the beginning of June there is the change in the schedules.

Peter thankyou for your help
Yes our dates are rock solid
I guess the confusion comes with say Amsterdam -Cologne, point to point appears to be only 6 euro, so thought maybe wasn't good value including a leg such as that in a select pass ? Or is it simply better to just grab the 5 day select pass and use the search engine to plan accordingly ?
Again thanks

Hi.
An Eurail pass is definitely the lazzy and relaxing way but not always the cheapest way.
Amsterdam - Cologne is as point to point ticket special fare available from EUR 29. The EUR 6 is ONLY a reservation fee!!!
If you travel by an Eurail Pass, most connections are free. Especially if travelling on a 1st class Eurail pass, you won't need a reservation at all, as there are always free seats available.
Amsterdam - Cologne: https://rail.cc/en/eurail/amsterdam-to-cologne
This train is free with Eurail!
Cologne - Heidelberg: https://rail.cc/en/eurail/cologne-to-heidelberg
Travel not the hight-speed-line, travel via Koblenz and Mainz trough the river Rhine valley. :)
You can also stop there.
All routes are free!
Heidelberg - Zurich: is easy. First by free regional train to Mannheim (journey is 10 minutes, running every 15 minutes). Then by direct ICE train (sometimes with easy change in Basel) to Zurich, also at least every hour!
No reservation required = free!
Zurich - Innsbruck: use a direct Railjet (RJ) train (free of extra fees!) in direction of Vienna/Budapest:
https://rail.cc/en/eurail/zurich-to-budapest
Innsbruck - Venice: here you will have to pay an extra reservation fee of EUR 7 (2nd class) or EUR 11 (1st class). Available at all stations during your trip. Details here:
https://rail.cc/en/eurail/innsbruck-to-venice
And in Heidelberg I recommend you the Hostel Lotte. Really very friendly and nice, directly at the castle and in the old town: https://rail.cc/en/heidelberg/lotte-the-backpackers/l448

NO-this can be had from 19 eur-though for more popular trains it is more often 29. can also try via nshispeed-seems to have different quota as [ux]https://rail.shop/bahn[/ux]

Hi.
It always depends on the country of delivery and is mentioned at the end of your order procedure in the shop.
You can't miss it as you have to confirm and check it with a box.
Usually it is 7 business days.

Peter:
Zurich to innsbruck, according to the website it says EUR 4.50 required, does this apply to our eurail pass,if so do we pay on the train or at the Zurich station.
Thanks

Hi.
There are direct Railjet trains. FREE of extra reservations: https://rail.cc/en/eurail-train-reservation/railjet/%C3%B6bb-rj/54
It says: A reservation is possible but not required.
Which means: if you travel outside peak times, you won't need a reservation. Save your money and travel for free.
If you want a reservation, get it in Zurich train station. :)

By the way ... if you currently stay in Zurich, there are two optional ways to Italy (Milan). From Milan you could also continue by free regional train to Venice.
Route 1 from Zurich trough the Alps (free!): https://rail.cc/blog/zurich-milano-albula-bernina/
Route 2 from Zurich trough the Alps (extra fees - possible visit of Matterhorn - one overnight stop required): https://rail.cc/en/eurail/zurich-to-zermatt
Milan - Venice: https://rail.cc/en/eurail/milan-to-venice
Are you currently in Heidelberg?

Peter
Currently in Zurich, stayed at St Goar and missed Heidelberg,we are off to Innsbruck this AM. Have a days travel up our sleeve now.
Traveling on a sunday is hardly peak so wont worry about extra reservation.
Thanks again Peter for the advice

FYI there is no extra charge Innsbruck to Venice,no reservation reqd either-so thats a clean run from Holland to Venice on the Eurail ticket,1st class well worth it and although slower than ICE we rate the RJ train to Vienna as the best, very clean and comfortable.
Also handy to point out to anyone not aware-there are 240v connections at your seat + headfone connection for music.

Interesting this information.
Which train connection do you use (time) between Innsbruck and Venice?
Thank you! Always helpful such information! :)

Hi,
the official tariff for the direct EC trains München - Innsbruck - Italy says that EuRail and InterRail holders are charged a supplement on board of the trains: 7€ in 2nd, 11€ in 1st class.
Anyway, I never used this route with InterRail and was curious whether this supplement is charged in reality. Thank you for your report! ;)
