Hello Dudes,
Actually we are going to brand the T-shirt as the disOrient Express. I wanted to submit this as a suggested itinerary but there doesnt seem to be a place to do that.
Here's the basic plan, start London, go to Brussels, Amtserdam Copenhagen, Oslo,. Narvik, Stockholm, Berlin, Dresden, Prague, Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, Istanbul, Sofia, Belgrade, Ljubljana, Trieste, Venice, Rome, Milan, St Moritz, Geneva, Barcelona, Madrid, Lisbon, Paris, and back. In 2 weeks!. Oh and there wil be at least 10 of us. The messy bit is actually when you get off the train and try and do a pre-arranged tram tour. And yes we know it's moe than a bit stupid. There's a blog that's easy enough to find, just replace European with Indian on your search and you'll see the feasibility study we did in India last year. If we can crack that, which we did, then flashy renfe and euronight sleepers, and local rapid transits that do what they say on the tin, should be a doddle.
Our main focus right now is on the fine details at city level. We've done quite a bt of research on most of them (note we have between 3 and 10 hours at each of the above destinations, bar Amsterdam but we've all been there loads of times havent we). Istanbul, where we'll need to make camp in some hostel somewhere, is one we havent worked out yet, but there's an obvious cicular route back and forth across the Bosphorus that we'll do, as well as the market fo course etc.
Anyway, here's the macro schedule. The dates are soft, we'll probably go a few weeks later, I wanted to synch with Narvik for summer solstice, but several of us have kids and that's just too early in summer term.
we're not really looking for recruits, but if you can prove you are solvent (i.e. 2 grand for the above is peanuts) , and amuzing, and dont need baby sitting, then if you want to spend 2 weeks on a train with a bunch of computers guys and gals, and a few wise old men of steam, then send me your CV. Othwerwise tell us how much you agree or disagree with any of this. The only seriously risky bit on the plan is the Bucjarest connection, which is stil a mere 2 hours. If you know anyone who's done budapest-bucaresti-istanbul recently please let us know.

even though I myself also like tram(ming-have done just over 300 tramcities by now) to start with the bad news:
as per this week NO MORE long-dist trains into IST-they are coming to the final stages if the great Euro-Asia tunnel there and that means busing it from just over the border-and obviously back too.
Most likely many other trains will have new timings as per the small Time change last sun in may too. recheck times when known.
You also mention a few SNCF-TGV-then you get the quota-they wont have enough seats for a larger group of I-Railies. And you seem to have chosen the most expensive trains if there is a choice-like the TH BRU-AMS.
That adds up.
And: wanting to see trams and just 9 mins for Zurich? cannot be serious-do the new links to airport and into the Glattal=much more interesting as those trains that look all the same.

Hej,
how are your plans proceeding? I think within the next few weeks most of the new timetables will be out so you will be able to update your schedule.
I wrote you a PM some time highlighting the biggest issues in your plan (for instance the withdrawal of the Zürich Elipsos)... :)

in my opinion it's a little bit without of sense going to madrid and don't even touch east europe, countries like poland and ukraine at least.
