Hi,

I'll be going on my first interrail trip for 3 weeks during March/ April.

I will be skiing in Chamonix for a week first, and then plan to begin my adventure from Geneva heading eastward across Europe (perhaps with some zig-zagging on the way - see below) before curving round to head back west across Germany and to Amsterdam.

So, here is my current route plan (I still need to figure some of it out, although I may just decide those bits when I get there):

Geneva - Milan where I will spend my first night (or 2), perhaps with some scenic stops on the way in the Alps (any suggestions?)
Milan - Zurich OR Innsbruck via Lake Como. Zurich would perhaps be more convenient but it seems to be quite an expensive place to stay
Zurich/ Innsbruck - Munich I plan to visit Neuschwanstein Castle at some point during this leg, but I am considering doing it as a day trip from Munich rather than as a stop in between, is it easy to get to?
Munich - Zagreb At the moment I am considering doing this on the overnight train, staying in Zagreb for a night or 2 and doing a day trip to Ljubljana
Zagreb - Budapest Again possibly by overnight sleeper
Budapest - Vienna via Bratislava

This is where I am unsure what to do! I want to visit Prague, Krawkow and Warsaw before heading to Berlin for a few days but cannot decide what the best way to do this is. At the moment I am thinking Vienna - Prague, Prague - Krakow, Krakow - Warsaw, Warsaw - Berlin overnight. Any ideas?

As I mentioned, I plan to spend a few nights in Berlin as I have been before but don't feel I got to explore it as much as I would have liked because I was with my family. Then from here I want to squeeze in as much of Germany as I can, and not necessarily big cities, I have a strange desire to just get off at random 'small towns' and have a look around. Although I have planned quite a bit of my route I want to keep some freedom to be able to do things like that, it's a big reason I was drawn to go interrailing.

Anyway, I will eventually make my way to Holland where I plan to stay a night or 2 in Amsterdam after my pass has expired, so I need to get to Amsterdam on the 9th April. Then I have purchased a 'City Flyer' ticket for the ferry back to England (Hoek van Holland - Harwich) which covers the price of the train ticket from Amsterdam to the ferry.

So I have a few general questions:

Am I being too ambitious for a 3 week pass?
Are there any places in between/ near the places I plan to go that you would recommend? (For example, I have heard about the 'Bone Church' outside of Prague)
Any good hostel recommendations? Particularly in Berlin/ Amsterdam as I will definitely be spending a few days in each. I hear Sir Toby's in Prague is a must!

Apologies for such a long post! Any advice/ comments would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Callum

Hi Callum.
I apologize the late reply. I am just very busy with the development of the railcc site. :)

Looks good your route for 3 weeks. If it is too much at a point and you want to stay longer in a certain city, just do it.
It is good to have a route in your mind - but you can always change it during your trip.

Switzerland - here you will find some example routes:
https://rail.cc/en/barcelona-avignon-bern-salzburg-zagreb-spli/f7835?hilit=switzerland
Switzerland is in general very expensive! :o

Munich - Neuschwanstein (Füssen): direct local trains. Easy to reach. At the station you will find the bus going up to the castel, running very frequent: ~ EUR 2,50
MU - Castle: https://rail.cc/en/train/munich-to-fuessen
Castle - MU: https://rail.cc/en/train/fuessen-to-munich

If you want to travel by night trains, the route Vienna - Prague - Krakow - Warsaw is okay.
More details: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train
You can leave the night train Prague - Krakow early in the morning at Auschwitz, visit it and then continue to Krakow. But also day trips are easy to organize from Krakow.

Germany cities: Hamburg, Cologne, Heidelberg, Freiburg. Frequent and free (!) connections within Germany.

Hostels: check the country topics for information: https://rail.cc/en/countries

Hi Peter,

No worries, I really appreciate you taking the time to reply!

This is all very useful information, I think I'll book one or 2 hostels beforehand just so I have something to aim for (and obviously Amsterdam as I will be finishing there)

Thanks again for the help!
