Hey,

Looking through possible routes and I find myself stuck when I get to Budapest. This is because I hadn't noticed the big yellow notice saying service suspended on the Budapest-Venice night train! As an alternative I was looking at getting from Budapest to Croatia and then using the ferry service but after studying the timetables, prices and time that the ferry takes to get to Venice, I have started to have doubts. Any ideas on good alternatives for this route?

P.S. If possible we are looking to get into Venice early to head straight on to Florence. This is why the Night train would have been so suitable!

Hi,

yeah it is sad that the night train has been discontinued. We put some info regarding this matter here :arr: https://rail.cc/en/turkey/xtr

However, there is still some hope that it will run again during the summer but there is no substantial information yet, only rumors. ;)

Your alternatives:

Ferry is probably too complicated so let's drop this. Instead, you could go to Wien and then with night train either to Venezia and continue from there to Florence or you get the direct night train to Rome which stops in Firenze at around 6am.

However, there are plans to run a night train Budapest - Pula in summer (instead of the train to Venice) which you could use as far as Divaca, then wait for a train to Sezana, cross the border by bus to Villa Opicina and then go by tram down to Trieste. There you are back again on the rails and can go to Venice - Florence.
