Hi,

Paris will be the first leg of my trip at the start of the summer so I am hoping to find and book accommodation relatively soon to get the ball rolling. I like the sound of the Montmartre area and have found an affordable b & b / budget hotel at the bottom of the hill, 20 meters away from the Pigalle boulevard. Been looking at en eclectic mix of reviews for staying in the area regarding safety/seediness and I was wondering if anyone would care to share any experience they might have of Monmartre/Pigalle.

Thanks!

Hi!

The Pigalle area is one of the busiest tourist hot spots in Paris...loads of buses carrying daytrippers to the Moulin Rouge and up to Sacre Coeur etc etc...plus all other tourists of course.
As long as you take care of your stuff a little there wont be a problem. The tourists concentrate mainly on Bd de Clichy/Bd de Rouchechouart and Rue de Steinkerque (to Sacre Coeur), Place des Abesses and Place du Tertre.
The other side streets are rather quiet in comparison and apart from the main tourists routes through the quarter it is actually quite nice up there. Especially on the northern part of the butte it is much quieter. The most notorious tourist traps are at the steps up to Sacre Coeur where costers want to sell you anything and those nice guys who want to sell you wristbands... :|

If you want to go there I would focus on finding a good hostel/accomodation rather than worrying too much about the area. :)
