My partner and I are travelling to Europe in August 2012 for 6 weeks, and thinking of travelling the following by train:
Paris-Biarritz-Barcelona-Nice-Genova-Venice-Florence-Rome

I know it's a lot to take in but is it possible to do it in 3 weeks? We have a few days in London at the beginning, and have are hoping to tack on 2 weeks for a Greek Islands/Turkey cruise.

Whilst in Biarritz we are considering hiring a car for the day to see San Seb and Bilbao - is there a train route for this that you would recommend or would hiring a car be the best option?

We will also be fitting in Cinque Terre - do we need to purchase local tickets for travelling through here or can we use our Eurail?

As we are only visiting France, Spain and Italy - would you recommend the 3 country Eurail Select Pass (10days)??

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance. Misty

Hej Misty!

The EuRail Select pass certainly makes sense for your trip, although only if you want to travel first class. If you are fine with second class as well, you have to go with regular tickets which probably will be cheaper.

Anyway, I think it would make sense to slightly rearrange your trip:

Paris - Barcelona (either overnight or during the day) first, then to Bilbao and via San Sebastian to Biarritz and finally again with an overnight to Nice.
San Sebastian/Bilbao are connected with EuskoTren narrow gauge railway which is not included in IR/ER but prices are very cheap. From San Sebastian you can easily go by train to Biarritz so no need for a car. Have a look at the maps here :arr: https://rail.cc/en/maps

At Cinque Terre you can use your EuRail of course. However, it might make more sense to get a EuRail with less travel days and cover such small journeys with regular tickets bought locally.
In Italy, I would rearrange your tip: Genova - Cinque Terre - Roma - Firenze - Venezia. However, if you have to finish in Roma, just put it at the end of above route. :)

If you have any further questions, just ask. And if you decide to go with EuRail, you can purchase your tickets in the online shop :arr: [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux] and support our work here on railcc. Thank you. :)
