Hey guys
Me and my friend are planning our summer 2012 interail trip but its our first time interailing and we are unsure of how to make the best of our time when planning our trip.
We are going to get the 10 in 22 days pass and are thinking of getting a direct flight from Glasgow to Paris and starting our trip from there. We then are unsure of what route to take, we what to visit: Paris, Milan, Rome,Florence, Croatia, Slovenia. Barcelona was one of our original destinations but we think its too far away from our other destinations?
Ideally we want a balance between sightseeing and chilling/beaches destinations on our trip.
If anyone could help us out with planning our trip and advice on the destinations we want to visit it would be much appreciated!! :D

Hi there :D ,
As to Barcelona, have you thought flying directly to Barcelona (ryanair flies there from Glasgow), and then cathing a train to paris? From there you could catch a night train to Milan (don't waste a lot of time there the city doesn't have a lot to see...), then a train to florence, another to rome, and from rome you could go to venice (beautiful city +.+), from venice you can go in a night train to Ljubljana (also very beautiful). From Ljubljana you can catch a train to croatia.
By the way, have you decided where in croatia you want to go? Split, Dubrovnik and Plitvice lakes (https://rail.cc/en/plitvice-lakes/c) are some beautiful destinations.
Hope it was useful,
ANDREW

be aware that NIGHT trains Pari_Mil are now private= NOT covered by IR and cheapest if booked long advance-from 35 eur/single. Also: FR is notorious for difficult TGV-reservations obligatory, but quota controlled. Trains direct IT-SLO are also minimal or cancelled (but it just a short hop by bus over border- a few eur to pay) Trains in IT are quite cheap-even more if you are able to use the local trains and not the superfast, all in all I doubt if an IR would work for you-but you did not mention age.
Skip Barca: too hot in summer, and not a beachtown at all-also deserted in summer-, their locals know better as staying! That makes a much more sensible routing. If beach is beach for you (for me it is- the water and sand look the same anywhere) then just put in a few seaside stops along the coastal route Genova-Roma, or even thet cinqueterre area.

Hi.
Like nltrainer said:
Paris - Italy isn't possible by discounted night train anymore.
Details:

And Venice to Croatia is also cancelled (at least the night train).
Options by bus like nltrainer said or see here by local day trains:

Hi
Thank you soo much for your replies we've totally changed our route now since we cant get a train to Italy from Paris. So we are now thinking:
Paris - Munich– Vienna – Lake Bled – Zagreb- Split – Rome – Florence
Dont really know much about Munich so any info would be much appreciated. Also we are not completely set on Vienna, if anyone thinks Salzburg or Innsbruck are better cities would like to know your thoughts?
Anything else in relation to any of our other destinations we would love to hear aswell.
Thanks in advanced, Ash and Lilo. :D

Hi Ash and Lilo.
Looks good. :)
Also possible: Paris - Munich - Prague - Vienna or Budapest (very close) - Zagreb - Lake Bled - Italy
If you skip Prague, have a stop on your way from Munich to Vienna at Salzburg. For example in the morning Munich-Salzburg and continue in the evening to Vienna.

Hej!
I suppose you want to fly back to Glasgow from your last stop as well, right? So, you could look for the cheapest flight back home and then arrange your route accordingly.
Regarding the possible troubles with Barcelona, Milano and IT/SI border crossing:
- It is no problem to fit BCN in your schedule, for example: Paris to Portbou or Latour de Carol with cheap Lunéa night train, then continue to BCN - or travel with the Petit Train Jaune :arr: https://rail.cc/en/train/villefranche-de-conflent-to-latour-de-carol before finally going to BCN
There are also some fast daytime connections Paris - Perpignan - Figueres - BCN but these could cost a little more than going with the night train
- If you go Paris - BCN first, the next logical stop would be Milano (or Italy at least since Milano is not that interesting..). The most convenient, although expensive option to go there is the direct Elipsos night train :arr: https://rail.cc/en/train/barcelona-to-milan Bear in mind that although it seems really expensive at first, you save a lot of time as well as money (for overnight stay in ie Nice and other train reservations) compared to going with daytime trains.
- There is no train currently over IT/SI border, sadly. :| However, there are several other options to cross the border by bus/on foot and then continue with train. Your best options are: a) go to Trieste by train, then with the tramway to Villa Opicina, from where a bus runs across the border to Sezana where you can get on board the train again to go to Ljubljana. b) go to Gorizia (from Venezia), then cross the border by bus or on foot to get to the Slovenian part of the city, Nova Gorica...from there you can travel to Ljubljana via two routes, either (which is more scenic) via Jesenice or via Sezana. All options are simple but require quite a bit of time
If you decide to cut BCN, you can still go Paris - Milano with direct train (and with only an IR reservation), although only during the day.
