the DIRECT trains do NOT go via Byelorus-check poezda.net and click on train nr and see routing=all stops. Most trains go VIA Kyiv to other UKR cities or to Moldova.
Fares WILL vary by train-and also with time of year/season, but for the distance are a lot less as they would cost at DB or SNCF. ALL trains oly have sleeper or basic platskart-the usual Russky standard
However-it will be a lot cheaper to buy Russky bilet till last stop before border and get off and pay anew-or to only by as far as first big UKR stop (Konotop) and buy a new from there-but of course this will eat time. SOme reports are, that in RUS they want to see a visum for UKR (not needed for west-europe) and do not believe (or maybe cannot even conceive that fact) that we do not need that and then refuse to sell such tickets-fearing a big deportation to Siberia or so.
Which makes it also attractive to buy online beforehand.
