Hi a friend and I are planning on InterRailing from Italy to Portugal along (or as close to) the cost line as possible.
My questions are:
1.) When we purchase the I.R. pass do we also have to purchase tickets and reservations for some of the trains that we want to take
2.) Do we have to pay a supplement for every night train we take?
3.) Are there any other possible ways to avoid paying supplements and reservations for trains?
4.) What is the average cost of the supplements for 20days traveling in 4 countries?

Any other info or suggestions would be great too!! :) <3

Thx
Sia

Hi Sia.

1) No. If you know already some dates and routes you want to take, you can buy them in advance. But travelling in Autumn is fine. The trains aren't as busy like in the summer months. You can buy your reservations (if needed) as well then at stations during your trip.
Please read here: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation
And uf you want to support the railcc project and all the information, buy your official Interrail pass at the railcc shop.
Official passes, same prices like everywhere, free delivery to Europe in standard service:
[ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux]
Thank you. :)

2) For most yes - some have free 2nd class compartments, but mainly in Eastern Europe. So you save the money for a hostel, but you have to pay for the bed in the train. Details (prices, times, ...) about night trains:
https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train

3) Yes. Simply avoid the trains listed here:
https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation
The railccs also searched for special travel routes avoiding trains with extra fees. Here are a lot, just check them:
https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route

4) Depends on the trains you will use. See links above. :)

Have a sunny trip, Peter :)
