Hi,
I'm new to this site and to Europe. I plan to go visit Slovenia (from France). I'm thinking of taking the Marseilles - Venice Interrail (which goes via Nice). Then take a train from Venice to trieste and enter Slovenia from Trieste (bus). Is this a good option? Or is it cheaper if I take a train from Nice to Ventimiglia and then a TrenItalia train to Venice or Trieste?
I have not yet spent 6 months in the EU, so I'm not eligible for the InterRail pass. Any suggestions on cutting ticket costs and travel time are much appreciated!
Cheers,
Sandip

Hi Sandip.
There are no Interrail trains. Interrail is only a ticket to use on the national railway companies of Europe.
The standard route is via Nice ( https://rail.cc/en/nice/c ), Ventimiglia ( https://rail.cc/en/ventimiglia/c ).
If you are travelling such long distance, an Interrail pass might be worth. Or booking early point to point tickets to get special fares.
Option for you instead of the Interrail pass is an Eurail pass (=for non-Europeans):

Hi Peter,
Thanks for your reply!
One more question: Is it possible to buy the single country pass for Slovenia for travel from France --> Slovenia and the route passes through Italy? Or do I need to buy the Italy pass too? (expensive)
Thanks,
Sandip

Hi,
the One Country Passes are only valid within the particular country and you do not get any discounts in other countries.
Depending on how long you want to travel (and whether you can already get an InterRail pass when you travel) you might think of a 5in10 pass and including Austria and/or Switzerland on the way back.
Otherwise I think you will be better off with regular tickets.

Hi Flo,
Thanks for clarifying the point. It does not make sense for me to get the 5in1 pass since I will be traveling for just 4 days and plan to visit just Slovenia during this period. So I've decided to book a point-to-point from Nice, France to Koper, Slovenia using the interrail planner --> website removed as the railccs don't support it
The problem is that the prices are not available on the site. Any idea how I can get the ticket prices? Going to the train station is the obvious answer but I want to get a rough idea of how much its gonna cost.. Any past travelers to Slovenia care to chip in..? Thanks.
Cheers,
Sandip

Hi Sandip.
Sorry, I had to remove the link, as the railccs don't support this website in any way.
As well, there is no real Interrail planner available. These are just normal train connections.
Check details here: https://rail.cc/en/search-train-route
Book in two steps:
France to Italian border (Ventimiglia): https://rail.cc/en-ticket-offers/sncf-train-tickets-for-france/france/28
Italian border to Slovenian border: https://rail.cc/en-ticket-offers/trenitalia-train-tickets-for-italy/italy/38
If you book early, you can get good prices.
Tickets for Slovenia: local at the train station.
Peter :)
