So I have a 10 days travel within 22 days pass, and am thinking of the following route:
London - Brussels
Brussels - Amsterdam
Amsterdam - Berlin
Berlin - Prague
Prague - Vienna or Munich or Salzburg
Vienna or Munich or Salzburg - Venice
Venice - Rome
Rome - Naples/Pompeii
Naples/Pompeii - Bari
Bari - Patras
Patras - Athens
Flight home from Athens (which has already been booked - I think this might have been a bad idea, but there wasn't much space left on the plane and all other flights were either too expensive or at really awkward times, and it gives me the motivation to actually get to Athens and see the places I've always wanted to see, if that makes sense...)
Is this reasonable or possible or really silly given that I haven't booked any hostels in advance/have no idea how long I want to spend in each place, etc? Is it stupidly expensive? I'm such a travel newbie, perhaps shouldn't have started off with such a long trip...

Hi.
Looks like an interesting route. :)
And no worries... it is getting more relaxed now as main travel season ends at mid of September. Easier to get then an inexpensive bed in a good hostel without booking too much in advance. But I always recommend to book your hostel one night before you arrive online: [ux]https://rail.shop/hostelworld[/ux]
Then you arrive in the new city the next day and know where to go - it will save you a lot of time.
Your route...
London - Brussels: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/london-to-brussels
Brussels - Amsterdam: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/brussels-to-amsterdam
Amsterdam - Berlin: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/amsterdam-to-berlin
Berlin - Prague: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/berlin-to-prague
Now you have to decide where to go. I would recommend you Vienna. But it is a personal decission. It is also possible to first travel to Munich, then in the morning to Salzburg (2 hours) in the afternoon to Vienna (or the other direction). All trains are free of extra fees on the route Munich - Salzburg - Vienna.
Prague - Munich: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/prague-to-munich
Munich - Venice: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/munich-to-venice

Venice - Rome: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/venice-to-rome
In Italy try to avoid the Eurostar Italia train (reservation fee EUR 10) and also the IC trains with 4 digits numbers (also EUR 10). IC trains are free, but it is recommended to buy a reservation (EUR 3). Details here:

Patras - Athens: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-ferry/patras-ancona/greece-italy/11
In Greece you may have to use a bus to Athens due to the problems with their railway company:

I hope this answer will help you planing your trip. And I hope as well that you bought your Interrail ticket here at the railcc shop to support our work. :)
