We will be taking the train from Villefranche de-Conflent with our nine-month old so we don't have the stamina to do the full route. Where is the best midpoint to stop and get off and explore a bit before descending back to Villefranche?

Hello, you may have landed on ths slowly dying forum thanks mr. Google-but the original holders have left it and this is not the average train-riding question, so that takes time.
1.such more touristy questions are better posted on regular such forums, tripadvisor being the best known-then do NOT use ´trains´ but EUR/FRance.
2.when I checke myself a map and older printed timetbale (old fashioned nah-I keep such things) there seems to be only 1 possible slightly bigger -but still tiny village along it- Pont, or Font Romeu (yes, ´roman bridge). The timings on this line are also very seasonal and most trains from VFr end there-just 2 or 3 go on and do the whole route.
Now I must give up- and let you do the search: if that village is close by the train stop and IF the eastern section of the line is the scenic part-or not-my guess is not, but tastes on what is scenic also differ a lot. So again as before; ask others in case you rally want to know it all.
ANY even smaller FRench village will have a small shop, and as it ssems like the local main settlement, probably also what one can expect in such a place.
Alors: bonne chance, or good luck with it. Also do note there may be temporary rail replacement buses along part of the normal electric line linking VFr with the coast. Best to use the LOCAL TER part of the main sncf site for most accurate info> this region also has quite cheap ride-at-will tickets for MORE as 1 day only-@ just 10 or 12€/day-ONLY available online via some app. These cover all these lines.
