and it's been like that for several years - you can't go to or from Greece by train. You can travel inside Greece, but if you want to use Bulgarian trains it's easier to get a bus (pay extra) from Athens to Sofia than to try to find some way of replacing the missing rail link from Thessaloniki. Serbian international trains have been stopped for a few years as well so that route is out completely.

The other option is a ferry from Greece to Italy, some of which are linked to Interrail, see the website. But guess what, the ferries have terrible (or none) train connections in Greece.

I'm looking for a solution to cross Balkans area from Switzerland to Athens in end September with Interrail ... Is it really impossible?
