Good afternoon. I'm thinking about purchasing the Britrail Pass for consecutive days, but I'm wondering if I can take all the trains I want in a single day. That is, if I travel from Manchester to Liverpool and return to Manchester on the same day, is that only valid for one day?
Thank you.

Yes, why shouldn’t it be? If those are the only trips you planned, a normal ticket is cheaper. A Britrail pass means free travel at all British trains that day, never mind the direction. You get the pass propably not as 1 pass for 2 days, but as 2 consecutive passes, for 1 day.

A pass day is a day - it doesn't matter how many trains or how far you travel. But Liverpool to Manchester is not far, the normal fare for a same day return journey varies depending on what time you set off (Monday to Friday), ranging from £24.90 (start before 08:30), , £20.50 (start 08:30-09:30) and £18.90 (start after 09:30 or any time weekend). It it is possible to save a small amount by buying a ticket only valid with one company but that just adds confusion. And it isn't worth booking on advance and fixing yoruself to a specified train. There are 3 trains per hour from Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester Oxford Road/Piccadilly and 2 per hour to Manchester Victoria - the prices quoted are valid with any operator and can be bought at the station just before travel. Do not buy a ticket for each direction, this is much dearer. The Britrail two consecutive days pass is £96 - so is a massive waste of money if you only do short trips.
