My family is currently planning our summer vacation to Montenegro and we thought it would be interesting to drive to Belgrade and take the the famous scenic Belgrade - Bar rail line the rest of the way. I was unable to verify where one of us heard this, but supposedly it is (was?) possible to load a car onto said train, this would be convenient as it would save us from having to find storage in Belgrade for ours and renting one in Bar. Is this the case? And if so, how would one go about it?

Interesting Q. You need to know this forum is not what google promises it to be-its simply slowly dying-some people-like me sometimes, take an interest and try to share what they know. As I myself do not have car nor have ever had one, I also had to go search.
1.always first check seat61.com- an excellent site from UK=GB that gives basic info for all railwaysystems in EUR, mostly aiming those who have never used it. ONLY the overnite train should be able to, as daytime is now a trainset-plus it does not run all year, only summerseason
2.a general touristy forum like tripadvisor-where one can put any Q re travels- ONLY showed last results as ´yes´ for this for some 5/6 yrs ago-so I thought ´pre-covid´.
3.the site of srbvoz=serbije railways- does NOT allow online direct booking, but has an overview of all trains that dep from the newly ugly concrete monster named Bgr Centar, and Hooray! yes, the 20.00 nighttrain to Bar (to arr next morning) DOES show also pix for sleeper/kushet AND a sign for car-carriers-which I thus take as ´ítspossible!.´
4.to make a booking-certainly much recommended, is only possible via contact a local travel-agent, who will then send someone to the station to buy the actual ticket-which can only be done maybe 2, or just 1 month advance. This thus also means you have to trust them that they will do that for the money you have to pay them+ their commission to do it.
I have only seen one mentioned: putniktravel.rs. I also called their site-only in serbian, but it does not show an easy tool-which likely means you have to mail them and explain what you want. NO garantee from me or this site its reliable or trustworthy-maybe yes, maybe no. I advise you to also put same Q on tripadvisor and see if any other response may come up.
NB: you did not tell from where you come, but there are also ferries from Bar or Cerna Gora=black hights= Monte Negro-or closeby other ports along old Yugoslav coast-or also ALBania now to ITaly-which may help you in making a grand round trip.
