I've found that there is a connection by train between the 2 citys (possibly even going further to guilin). I can't find any way to book a seat online though. For buses i see options but for any international rail between the 2 countrys I can't find anything. I've heard that you can book the train in person at the trainstation but I also don't know what trainstation in hanoi i would need to go to to begin with.
If anyone can help, thank you.

1. IN VN AFAIK it does not matter (anymore) what station-plus that Hanoi is not blessed with that many TRAIN stops (it has a brand new and for this month FREE metro with loads of stops). Of course, do I even need to tell that?-ONLY for In Vnam. That is quite an innovation with not that long ago. PLUS: If you had a tiny little bit more of ASEAN travel exper. you would have noted that ANY place where those nasty/stinky bekpekkers gather/stay are loads+more of tiny offices who can arrange it also for you-for a few 1000 dongs extra
2.Yes, for In CN its very, very advisable to book trains before-and ths is usually quite a nightmare for non-Chinese-and even more not holding CN banks or codes+ all that. The best (this is only from other forums-no own exper.) site for that is said to be trip.com. You can mail them befre the bookings open and (as the places where this can be done are limited) they will contact the relevant office (and probably lay down a few CNY). Most reports on this are positive. Of course this will add some yuan to the bill-but payment can be done from the usual western means like VISA etc-also not at all common In CN. Prhaps seat61.com, the all-knowing general rail site and far, far more uptodate and better as this one, has more suggestions.
