transport runs frequently but nothing is direct and many options have a local bus as part of the journey.

Frankfurt airport has a variety of locations, pick the wrong one and the journey planner gives over complicated answers. Use "Frankfurt(M)Flughafen" as the start location and it will work out which is the best real location to use. Read the answer details carefully because there are two railway stations and at least two bus stops.
A bus with a long number (eg BUS15039) is replacing a train due to track engineering work and will go from an exit of one of the railway stations (Fern or Regional) and normal train tickets through to Heidelberg are accepted. Bus AIR to Darmstadt goes from the bus station in Terminal 1 and the bus/train sections of the journey have to be bought seperately. And there is at least one tain in the mix with prefix FLX which does not take normal train tickets and is basically unusable!
