I'm going to be taking the night train from Vienna to Milan in just over two weeks, and I've run into a bit of a dilemma concerning the booking.
I have two options: to go instantly and easily for a place in a three bed compartment via xxx (edit: deleted link), but at a reasonably high cost (£40ish), or to book a cheaper reclining seat or couchette through Trenitalia.
The problem with Trenitalia is that I naturally can't pick up my reservation ticket, so would have to have it sent to me. Yet from what I've seen, it appears that Trenitalia will not send anything to anywhere outside of Italy. I was therefore wondering whether there was a way to get one of the cheaper tickets, or whether I would have to go for the pricier, albeit comfier, option.

Hi.
Trenitalia is shipping only inside of Italy.
For some dates (not available every date), the connection is also bookable at the shop to a fair price:

Details here:

Cheapest option is to book at a station in Austria or a bordering country.

again: first and basic rule-railways in EUR do NOT work like in the UK-with its multitude of companies. They work like the old mail=post: any country is its own area-and that railway serves all. it does not matter what is on the train or wagons- in the UK you cannot buy a French stamp-so in Austria (leaving from) you have to use the OeBB= That states national railways. Applies in principle to any booking wherever-though only the very last years some railways have ventured out and allow bookings into their hometurf.
Next to that: allowing IR-holders to book only the ''supplements'' via websites is rare and limited to just a few exceptions. Go to a station-where someone (usually very well protected as state-official by trade unions and all that) will do the work for you. You simply have to think backward a few years.
