Hi all,
We are looking into going from Amsterdam to Portugal by train. However, we are a bit disappointed by the options.
The journeys we find take long and are expensive. That is not the combination we want.
Options we found were often 38+ hour journeys with a lot of reservations but not so fast travel speeds (except for the TGV-like trains up to Barcelona).
We are looking for advice on how to make this trip affordable or at least enjoyable?

Ik heb dit onlangs in april gedaan. 2 dagen heen en 2 dagen terug (lisboa-Madrid met de bus, omdat trein hier dienstregelingtechnisch vrijwel onmogelijk was). Maar ik ben zo’n pensionado in een afbetaald huis, dat betekent tijd en geld zat. Maar als je niet in zo’n situatie zit en niet treinreizen als een hobby op zich ziet, begin er niet aan. Het is niet meer affordable en enjoyable te krijgen dan het nu is. Treinen in Portugal zelf zijn overigens wel betaalbaar.

Klopt als een bus-voor juist deze verplaatsing is de trein gewoon een keus voor enkel diegenen die ondanks alles groen willen doen.
Je kan inderdaad tijd sparen-geen geld, door met die TGV te reizen: Paris-Barcelona, en in ES hun variant-de AVE tot Mad en dan wat anders.
Als je dan ook nog zo wel terug wil-dan is de Interrail pas beste keus, maar met forse extraś voor de REServeringen.

what you describe is reality - and we can't change that. There are two big problems, the first being that you don't say whee in Portugal you wan tto go to. And the second is that access from Spain to Lisbon is very poor by train. Porto or Algarve - maybe we can help, but Lisbon is complicated!

Thank you all three for the confirmation! A flixbus would indeed also be an option to still keep it affordable. Maybe we then stick to Madrid and the north of Spain and leave Portugal for somewhere in the future. Thanks again for the tips and comments!
