We're hoping to get back to Sicily later this year, just checking trenitalia for travel from Catania-Rome in early October. The search keeps coming up with zero results, despite being (just) inside the 6-month window trenitalia allows for other schedule searches. What am I missing?

you are missing the fact that Italian timetable planning and reservations systems are not as reliable as a calendar. They will be ready when they are ready....

Thank you. That is the answer I was hoping for :)
I was concerned that services might have been cut, as happened to us last time when we were left scrambling after the permanent abandonment of a catania-naples ferrry. That it's simply "unhurried" Italian bureacracy is great news.
