Hi!
What is the best/cheapest way to go from Porto to Monaco (and return)? I would like to get there on August 26 (morning) and start the return journey on August 27. This trip can include a low cost flight if it is a really low cost one and if that helps to plan the trip.
Could you help me? Go by train is a good option? Should I buy an InterRail ticket or individual tickets? How much it will cost?
Thank you for the help! I hope you keep this project alive :)

Hej! :)
Am I right, you want to leave on 26th and return the following day?! :?: Aint gonna happen with the train; Porto - Monaco is at least ~24h with several changes of train and trains with extra reservations.

Hi Flow!
Is everything fine with you and with frisbee? :)
I want to arrive on 26th, not leave. Time on trains is not an important issue. I can start and finish the journey when I want.
Thank you!

Yup thank you it is going well... :) Pity I wont make it to Portugal this year!
Well ok, what about a 5in10 Global Pass?
You could then go Porto - Vigo (regular ticket with 50% discount to the border at Valenca/Tui), then with the Talgo (6,50€ reservation) to Madrid where you would arrive in the evening. The problem is then that you would have to stay overnight and it would be quite tricky and reservations would be needed to go to Nice within the next day.
So, maybe instead of going via Vigo, go via Coimbra and Vilar Formoso/Fuentes de Onoro with the Surex night train to Irun (7€ reservation plus discounted ticket to the border). Then you can travel to Nice via Toulouse and Marseille, albeit including one reservation (~6€)
For the way back you might have time to add an extra stop in Barcelona or Madrid, maybe include the Petit Train Jaune? I'll try to work out some ideas tomorrow. ;)

I would like to meet you and Peter at Lucern but I will not go to the event this year :-\ We have to find another solution to drink a beer together!
Returning to the subject, I thought about the 5in10 Global Pass but I wasn't sure if that was the best option. Now I think I will opt for it, unless the supplements turn this too much expensive. Another concern that I have is about the reservations... Can I make all reservations in Portugal? If that is not possible, do you think I will have problems with that? I'm specially worried about the reservations from Porto to Monaco, because I have to arrive exactly in the morning of 26th.
I like the idea of include the Petit Train Jaune in the way back. Can you give me a draft of a schedule for my trip?
Again: thank you!

Hej,
I am sure we'll find the right time and place for another beer or two..! ;) Pity you wont make it to the meeting.
Well, a 5in10 certainly will be a good option. You're going to the Supercup to support Porto right? 8)
If you have to be there in the morning of 26th, you are lucky since the direct night train from Hendaye :arr: https://rail.cc/en/night-train/hendaye-nice-icn-4630/140 is definitely running on this date according to the scheudule planner of SNCF.
This train is the only overnight train arriving in Nice from the southern/western part of France, so it is definitely a good option.
To get to Hendaye, use the Surex from Coimbra. It arrives early though, so you'll have the whole day to spend until the night train leaves - and you are travelling two consecutive nights on a train. Hope you dont mind. ;)
I've edited this route in the railcc database: :arr: https://rail.cc/en/train/-to-
It might be sensible to get an earlier train to Coimbra, just to be safe since 7 minutes connection time are not much - usually it should be enough but it is such an important connection that it might be good to invest that extra time. ;)
Instead of sitting around in Hendaye at the station all day you could also travel along the coast up to Biarritz or back to San Sebastian; just as you like just to be sure to get the train in the evening (it stops as well in Biarritz).
If you prefer to arrive one day in advance, on the evening of 25th you could use this connection: :arr: https://rail.cc/en/train/-to-
On the way back, I assume you could leave on the morning of 27th? If you would like to include the Petit Train Jaune, you will have to spend a night somewhere in that area - either on the top, in Latour de Carol, or down in Villefranche or Perpignan. On the next day you can travel to Barcelona and then with AVE to Madrid and back to Portugal with the night train.
The problem in that case is that the night train from Madrid runs to Lisboa via Encontramento - so you would need a ticket from the border in Marvao-Beira which will be more expensive, but still at a reasonable price I think.
Overall costs:
InterRail 5in10 169€
Reservation (seat) for night train Coimbra - Hendaye 7€
Reservation (reclining seat) for night train Hendaye - Nice 6€ oe
Reservation for day train Toulouse - Nice 6€
Reservation for day train on the way to the Petit Train Jaune (optional) 6€
Reservation for AVE Barcelona - Madrid 10€
Reservation for night train Madrid - Encontramento 7€
Discounted ticket Porto - Vilar Formoso ~14€
Discounted ticket Marvao-Beira - Porto ~20€
Total ~239€
It should be possible to get all reservations at Porto Campanha or Sao Bento. If not you could also have a look at our online shop :arr: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation

Yes, I will support Porto in the Supercup :) I would invite you to join me but I didn't forget the experience you had in London with Arsenal... :(( Well, I will try to forget that if you want to join me :)
Thank you for all the suggestions for my trip: great help! I like the idea of two night trains. I just need to look for a shower somewhere near Hendaye when I get there... Now I will check the time schedule of trains to the way back, including the Petit Train Jaune for sure, but I would like to avoid some extra fees. Do you think it is possible?
After I check this stuff, I will use railcc's shop for the first time :)

Cool! I'd be certainly cool to come to Nice but are there still tickets available? I have to think it through, let's see.. :)
Regarding the way back to Porto...no problem to get to Barcelona without paying extra...however, you'll have to stay overnight somewhere in the Petit Train Jaune area as you wont be able to travel Nice - Petit Train Jaune - Barcelona within a day without extra supplements.
From Barcelona you only have one daily train without reservation, change trains in Zaragoza. From Madrid I now have found a better option, going with a night train to Redondela de Galicia and from there to Porto.
I'll provide exact timings later (or tomorrow) as I have some friends around. ;)

Flo,
Unfortunately, there are no tickets available anymore :( At least, I tried to check that and I didn't find anything...
If I buy the InterRail pass today, it gets here on time to start the journey (24th)?
Thank you!

Hej Jose... :)
Sad to hear that. The shipping is in standard service up to 7 business days. Usually it is much faster - but there is no guarantee on it. Express shipping is within 3 business days to Portugal (10-15 EUR extra). So I recommend the express shipping.
Have sunny days ... Peter :)

Flo,
Instead of using the IC train to go from Porto to Coimbra (reservation 4€ / transfer time 7min), I think it is better to use this connection free of extra fees:
U
Porto Campanhã 1614
Aveiro 1712
or
U
Porto Campanhã 1655
Aveiro 1740
R
Aveiro 1750
Coimbra-B 1840
Even in my case (I have to pay a discounted ticket), this option is cheaper.

If you look for the train on the RENFE website you still can book tickets for the 24th - maybe the guy did something wrong? It is difficult to tell from here.. ;) I can try to ask if a reservation is possible at my station here tomorrow.
In case you really wont get a reservation for this train...I guess we will have to look for an alternative connection via Madrid.

I made a call to the CP Call Center and they didn't know how to explain what the guy said to me at the station... I checked the information on the RENFE website and I think I found the problem: there's no tickets for a 2nd class seat until 29th, only beds. Anyway, I don't know why he did not mention that!
Do you know how much cost the cheapest bed in this train?
Other thing: I don't think I can make the reservation for Hendaye-Nice with CP guys. What can I do about it?
I'm a lit bit worried about my situation... :-\ I hope you can help me.

Yup, that probably was the problem - no seats available anymore, only beds; have a look for the prices here :arr: https://rail.cc/en/night-train/lisbon-hendaye-th-310/74
Regarding the night train Hendaye - Nice...definitely ask for a reservation at Porto Campanha tomorrow when you get your reservation for the night train to Hendaye (in case you want to take that option).
I can not say if the are able to do it or not, but it will be interesting for other travellers too. If you do not get it there I would recommend to get it from the SNCF website as e ticket - which requires a credit card however! :arr: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/france/fr

When I went to Porto Campanha today, the guy said the system to make reservations after Hendaye was down. I don't know if this was just an exception or not.
I tried to use SNCF website but I just found normal tickets... How can I get a reservation from there?
In case I find more problems tomorrow with all this stuff, which alternatives I have? I saw this one:
Porto Campanha 1755
Porrino 2147 / 2248
Medina del Campo 0452 / 0806
Valladolid Campo Grande 0841 / 0909
Hendaye 1351
Is it good? Do you know a better one?
Thank you...

OK..
well the connection is OK, but you will need three reservations (7€ for the night train plus 6,50€ twice for the following two trains).
What you could do is to continue in the night train from Porrino to Madrid (7€) spend the day there and go in the evening to Hendaye (Madrid dep 1600 - Hendaye arr 2150).
Or, spend the day in Madrid, then go with night train (7€) to Barcelona :arr: https://rail.cc/en/night-train/madrid-cerbere-estr-370/84 (attention timings are currently changed, arrival Barcelona 0853 next week)
then continue with regional trains to Nice, arrival Nice 2032 :arr: https://rail.cc/en/train/barcelona-to-nice
But you wouldnt be in Nice in time for the game then, so would have to stay a night there. Or take faster trains which require reservations, like this :arr: https://rail.cc/en/train/barcelona-to-nice
Regarding reservations on the SNCF website, please read here :arr: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation/tgv-sncf/42
> Go to the website, enter your travel dates and then select Abo Forfait 2eme as an option - then the reservations will show up :)

Hi!
Today I went to Porto São Bento. They showed me the RENFE system saying that Sud Expresso is really booked until 29th. So, I had to opt for the alternative I saw: Porto-Porrino-Medina del Campo-Valladolid-Hendaye-Nice. I did not use the InterRail ticket for the first route to save one day of my pass that allows me to go to the Petit Train Jaune in my way back to Porto.
Regarding the night train from Hendaye to Nice, normally they could make reservations at Porto São Bento or Campanhã, but today they tried a few times (even for different dates) without success. To solve this, I made the reservation on the SNCF website.
Resumé:
Porto Campanhã - Tuy: 8,75€ (Regular fare with Youth Card discount - to save one day of my pass)
Tuy - Porrino: ~2€ (if the controller don't let me go just with InterRail pass)
Porrino - Medina del Campo: 6,50€ (2nd class seat)
Medina del Campo - Valladolid Campo Grande: free of extra fees
Valladolid Campo Grande - Hendaye: 6,50€ (2nd class seat)
Hendaye - Nice: 2€ (SNCF website Fortait 2nd)
