Hi,

Just booked accommodation for day 2 of my trip (day 1 is Bruges). Amsterdam hostels are really pricy for the Saturday night, so I am doing a detour via the Ardennes/Luxembourg/Mosel on to the Rhine Valley where I will be staying at Boppard.

What's it like? Looks OK to me, but I guess most places along that stretch of the Rhine are quite nice though.

From there I think I'll go back up to Amsterdam for a couple of days. Looking at the connections, it looks like I will be in for a 5 or 6 hour train journey (longer than I thought) and that I may need to reserve the train from Koln up to Amsterdam.

Does this sound right, or should I just be able to hop on??

Many thanks,
Chris.

Hej,

I've never been to Boppard (only passed through, hehe) but it is certainly a nice place to stay for one day. :) I'd just have a look at the village, then maybe have a walk through the vineyards up to the hills overlooking the Rhine.

For your trip back to Amsterdam you do not need a reservation! Just hop on the ICE and enjoy. Like I've written before, either go south first via Mainz to Frankfurt Flughafen and enter the ICE there; or go north to Köln to get the ICE there.

Yes, I think it will work well.

I'd like to do a scenic route asap and Ardennes/Mosel/Rhine should be good for that. The plan is to get off the train at Luxembourg for a couple of hours, get some lunch and have a look around.

Only drawback is I'll have about 14kg on my back - unless I get a bit more ruthless with my packing!

From the Rhine I still have a number of choices, Amsterdam, Switzerland, Munich or even Paris if I want to do the anti-clockwise loop.... :|

- 3 hours or so should be definitely fine for Luxembourg...it is not that big. ;) The EU quarter is a little outside the city but worth going to in my opinion. In the city itself, I'd have a visit to the Kasematten, the old fortifications.
- There is a baggage service in Luxembourg station where you can leave your backpack if you want - I'd recommend to invest the money to do so while daytrips with your luggage. It is much more fun walking through a city for a quick visit if you do not have to lug everything around.
- Do not underestimate the length of the overall trip Brugge - Luxembourg - Boppard...so leave early and dont spend too much time (3-4 hours) in Luxembourg if you want to arrive not too late
- Köln in the north and Frankfurt/Mannheim are definitely major hubs in central Europe with excellent connections to everywhere. :)

Enjoy your trip! ;)
