Hello,
I'm going on an Interrail trip this summer with 5 other friends. It is the first time for all of us. We want to go from Barcelona to Milan leaving on the 14th of August and arriving on the 15th. We first saw the EuroNight train EN 273 leaving at 19h38 and arriving in Lausanne at 6h55 but turns out the seats are 45€ (told us at local station) so we don't want to take this train. (And from Lausanne we would take another train to Milan.)
The alternative route we found out is like this:
a) 15h16 - 18h00 Barcelona Sants - Cerbère, regional
b) 18h25 - 19h45 Cerbère - Narbonne, regional express
c) 21h26 - 22h41 Narbonne - Toulouse Matabiau, (?)
d) 00h28 - 8h08 Toulouse Matabiau - Nice Ville, night train lunéa (?)
e) 8h35 - 9h42 Nice Ville - Ventimiglia, regional express
f) 10h58 - 14h50 Ventimiglia - Milano Centrale, intercity
And my questions are:
1) Is this doable? I mean, isn't there the possibility of a train delaying and making us loose the connection or does this hardly ever happen? Do you recommend us making this route?
2) Is it possible to reserve the Toulouse - Nice train? It is a night train called Lunéa, I suppose. Can I make the reservation on railcc? I tried it yesterday but it kept saying error.
3) From that list of trains I think I can reserve c), d) and f). Can you tell me where? f) I think I can reserve on trenitalia website.
4) Regional and regional express trains don't require reservations, right? And should we have problems using them? Seats missing or anything?
Thank you very much in advance!

there is also possibility to take only regional trains to Toulouse this day without thinking about reservations. also between Ventigimilie and Milano
1) i think it's doable
2&3) may be try tomorrow because tomorrow starts new reservation system
4) yes, you have right. there is no reservation so also problems with missing seats is not possible

Wondering if this route actually worked? Thinking of doing exactly this trip and yeah- is it 'doable', and was there any extra charges/supplements for any of the trains?
Checked out the times and they are a little different but thats all, its basically still the same..
Thanks

well, you have to check carefully the timetables, especially in case of night train Toulouse - nice because it doesnt run every day. moreover it comes to nice a little bit later so you also have to check train to ventigilimie and Milan but it shouldnt be problem.
and if you want to see also this part of France you can change this itinerary and leave Barcelona earlier, about 8am.
then you will have some 1-3 free hours to make some little sightseeing in cerbere (there is beautiful bay with little beach) and in Narbonne ( in the centre there is a nice old church) and also in Toulouse.
and if you must to take shower during this part of travel you can go to Tarbes (1,5hour from Toulouse) and there 3 years ago was available shower for 1,5 euro ;)
