So are these trains free with a Rail Pass, except for the 10 euro reservation fee?

Yes. They are called AVE (Alta Velocidad Española) btw. ;)

Okay, well, 10 euros = not bad for a high speed train like that. More of them as well... I was afraid the only reasonable connection was the night train one.

EDIT: Although... This is a problem: The reservation must be picked up and paid at a Spanish train station at least 24 hours before departure. I'll be arriving in Barcelona in Milan and just going straight on to Madrid asap.
