Hi :D !

I'm going to interrail this summer with some friends and we are going to bern. I was just wondering if one day would be enough to see bern, saving the other day to go on a scenic train, or we should stay the two days in bern?

Thanks,
Andrew

The scenic trains are very good around there (Locarno to Domodossola is one ive done and free with Interrail)

I dont know of anything in bern so my recommendation is one and one. If there are lots of things you want to see in Bern then stay two days i guess

Hi,

although Bern is very nice I'd definitely recommend to use one day to go with a scenic train. Many possibilities in Switzerland! :D
Where are you heading afterwards - so maybe you can combine that trip with a scenic train?

Hi!
I'm thinking taking a train on the route chur-tirano (route of the bernina express) and then take a train from tirano - to milan.

Hi Andrew,

that is definitely a good decision to go with the Berninabahn - one of my favourite train rides in Europe! :)

Have you had a look at the route on the railcc site? :arr: https://rail.cc/en/train/st-moritz-to-tirano

From Bern the direct way will be with IC to Zürich, then change to an IC to Chur, from Chur you will travel with the Rhb Rhätische Bahn narrow gauge railway. Take a RE to St Moritz and change at Samedan to Pontresina, where you will have a connection to the Berninabahn.

Example:

Bern 0932 - 1028 Zürich
Zürich 1037 - 1152 Chur
Chur 1158 - 1346 Samedan
Samedan 1349 - 1356 Pontresina
Pontresina 1409 - 1621 Tirano
Tirano 1710 - 1940 Milano

Remember that the Bernina Express has a reservation fee; it consists of special panoramic cars. The regional trains (as in the example above) do not require any extra fees, just hop on the train and enjoy.

If you want to invest some extra time and money you could also include another scenic route:

Bern - Spiez - Goppenstein - Brig - Andermatt - Disentis - Samedan
or
Bern - Luzern - Göschenen - Andermatt - Disentis - Samedan

On both routes it is possible to reach Milano within a day - or you can make an overnight stop, for instance in Pontresina or Ospizio Bernina, both on the Berninabahn. Both routes include travel with MGB Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn which is not included in InterRail. But you will get 50% discount with an InterRail Youth pass.

If you need further help just ask. :)
