I don't understand why people would buy a book containing train times? Should we do this? Can we not just turn up at the pplace and ask in the actual station when train times to the next place are? Are train times really that irregular around Europe? For example, we are going from Madrid to Barcelona. Can we not turn up to the station in Madrid and ask for the train times to Barcelona and just go by that? Don't understand!!!
Also, do all trains that go across borders of countries have supplements? And is it worth booking this in advance?
Our route is Madrid-Barcelona-Marseille-Paris-Amsterdam-Berlin-Hamburg-Vienna-Prague-Budapest.
Which supplements do we need to book for this route? Also are train timetables necessary??
Thankyou SO SO much if you can help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! xoxoxoxoxoxoxooxx

well, yes, you can!
but they also can tell you: sorry, there is no more places for interrailes. here you have a normal ticket. 150 Euro please
between these cities there is no any trains without reservation needed.
correction: in some periods it is possible with one stop in Zaragoza

no, there are some where you don't need reservation. for example: Barcelona-Cerbere (France) and then you can take another train and another and another.
but then comes night and you need reservation because in majority of night trains you will need reservation. but you also can stay at night in some place and in the morning continue you travel with free-of-charge regional trains.
So, if you do not like surprises and moreover you are sure that you will not change your plan, book as much as you can. just for your tranquillity.

I have just got back and had the Thomas Cook rail timetable - if i ever go again i shall not go without it! It is very useful but it is not for everyone.
Most stations in europe also have an all day departure poster which is quite useful.
The book allows you to check connections as you are going along and ones some way off. If you are doing lots of trains then it would be very useful, if not you should be fine

Hi.
Concerning your route...
Do you want to keep it in that order?
Madrid-Barcelona-Marseille-Paris-Amsterdam-Berlin-Hamburg-Vienna-Prague-Budapest.
Think about sorting it like this: ... Amsterdam - Hamburg - Berlin - Prague - Vienna - Budapest
From Spain to France you could use the Petit Train Jaune crossing the Pyrenees:
https://rail.cc/blog/little-yellow-train-video/
Madrid - Barcelona: with reservation fee - https://rail.cc/en/interrail/madrid-to-barcelona
Barcelona - Marseilles: the direct connection can be made by free trains - https://rail.cc/en/interrail/barcelona-to-nice
Marseilles - Paris: do it by night train - either by regional train to Toulon and change there to the night train, or spent some hours in Nice before.

Paris - Amsterdam: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/paris-to-amsterdam
Amsterdam - Hamburg: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/amsterdam-to-hamburg
Hamburg - Berlin: free direct ICE trains
Berlin - Prague: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/berlin-to-prague
Prague - Vienna: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/prague-to-vienna

Hi Peter
That was amazingly helpful...our interaill trip is dedicated to you (no actually it really is, we're doing a video). Another quick question...what do we do when we come across trains that are not daily...and that require us to check a schedule that we don't have?
https://rail.cc/en/train/paris-to-amsterdam
for example, trying to get from Paris to Amsterdam...
also do free direct ICE trains run on saturdays and sundays aswell?
and for all you haters out there, particularly you nltrainer,...there is nothing wrong with being from the south-east.

I am as well so i agree!

Most of europe seems to have saturdays the same as the week but sunday is often different (having said this sometimes it is just saturday that is strange)
With those Paris amsterdam connections it seems to vary every day (on the first connection) for example tomorrow you have to have an extra change in rotterdam, Wednesday it says to change in breda and not rotterdam and so it goes on.
If you have some specific dates and destinations i could work through some exact routes for you - (if you would like). Feel free to either post them down below here or send me a message on the website
This goes for anyone else as well, i can do whole plans or just individual journeys but i would recommend giving it a go yourself first as it is your trip! (I also cannot guarantee to do it overnight especially if i am busy but i will try)

Hi.
I deleted the post of nltrainer - I don't now why he is always in such a bad mood?!? :(
Nice offer of Lordmwa - but if you want, discuss it here in the public even this are special individual travel dates.
There are a lot of readers here in the forum - much more as posters - and they enjoy every post done here. Thanks, Peter :)
