Hi,

I'm going to be using a euro cash passport card for my trip - did this in the US last year and it worked well for me. Although most of the countries I will be visiting are in the eurozone, there are a few which are not - namely Czech Rep, Hungary, Croatia, Denmark and Switzerland.

I read somewhere that a lot of places in non euro countries will accept the euro (albeit adding a bit extra to the exchange rate). To be honest this is better for me than drawing out local currency whenever I change borders, maybe just for a couple of days.

Anyone have any experience of how acceptable the euro is in practice? In the UK it's a definite no, but us British have always been a bit stuck in our ways!

Thanks,
Chris.

Hi Chris,

well, in general you will need to get local currency for all these countries.

However it often is possible to pay with € in touristy areas, shops etc in Eastern Europe - but there is no guarantee on that plus you will get a bad conversion rate and return money is in local currency.

Same should be true for DK and CH...the only place I remember where you could regularly pay with € was the McDo in Geneva - but it was too late then and I already got some CHF... :P

I'd recommend to have a look at conversion rates and then exchange some money in each country...it is part of the travelling experience isnt it? Although I have to say the € is very convenient. :)

Hi chris

I have just got back from a two week trip and used a Norwich and peteborough Gold Light current account debit card. I would highly reccomend it. No fees and as it is VISA works in almost all cash machines and many shops take it.

With no Fees at all it is quite possibly the cheapest way for a british person to get and use money while travelling anyhwere

I usually use credit card, good rates and no need to exchange money, just some small money for tickets or moving in the city.
