Hi :)

So all the hostels i've booked have lockers however the hostel i've booked in Nice: Villa Saint Exupery Beach hostel is the exception. Whilst the reviews are great I have a couple of safety questions:

Would it be safe to leave my rucksack locked to my bed during the day? Or should I take that around with me whilst wandering around?

Also: As a day sack I was going to use a typical draw string bag as it's very packable and light however - would this be too easy a day sack for pick pockets to take advantage of ?

I'd welcome any opinions :)

Hi,

Well, they don't have lockers, but maybe they have some kind of room or something like that where they don't mind you to keep your things. Some hostels have this to keep your things after check-in and until your room is not ready.
You make keep your rucksack in the room, just me careful and take everything important with you (money, documents, interRail tickets, camera...)

Concerning the day sack... it really depends on the countries you're going to visit. But if you always have an eye on it and follow the normal safety rules, i don't see any problem. At least, i always use it and had never had any trouble...

Hi,

if there are no lockers on the room, you usually can store valuables in a safe at the reception. The luggage storage di_map mentioned is an option for your backpack put usually the hostel does not take liability for things stored there so not much difference to leaving your stuff on the room.

If there is no locker on the room or the locker is too small I usually leave my big backpack on the room - it is a matter of trust, of course - but the other persons on the room have to trust you as well. ;)
All valuables are in my small photo bag anyway which I take with me all the time. For passport, money, ticket I have a small bag to put under my clothes as well but usually I'm too lazy to wear it...most cities are safe as long as you make the impression to look after your things.

Yeah, I rarely bother with lockers. Tips for everyone:

1. Bring as few valuables as possible so you don't have to worry so much. :)
2. Get a little padlock with a wire - you can use it to fasten your bag to the bed or something, and lock the ziplock handle thingies together. Then the thief will have to actually cut your bag open with a knife, which seems less likely.
3. Keep money, passport etc in a passport bag under your shirt. It may escape a robber's notice...
4. Get a fannypack (apparently this is unfashionable, I don't care). It was a really good place to keep my Interrail pass, phone and iPod.

So all I had in my daypack was a book and food and stuff.
