Hi,

Looking at including somewhere in Croatia into my trip in August. I would absolutely love to go to Dubrovnik (probably more so than almost anywhere else in Europe) but realistically may save this for another trip focusing entirely on the Balkans.

Anyway, I'm looking to add a taste of Slovenia/Croatia in between Italy and Hungary - so it's only the Istrian peninsula which is not going to put me too far off route. Any suggestion - Pula and Rijeka spring to mind but I know little of either of them.

Also, any advice on connections will be much appreciated. Looks like the best way from Italy (unless doing night train) would be to abandon the trains from Trieste and catch a bus into Slovenia rather than go via Villach.

Cheers,
Chris.

Hej Chris!

I've edited some routes Italy - Slovenia - Croatia:

Venezia - Ljubljana:

:arr: https://rail.cc/en/train/venice-to-ljubljana

Either via Villach (inlcuding the IC Bus with compulsory reservation) or via Gorizia - Nova Gorica where you have to get from one station to the other, ~4km either on foot or by bus/taxi. More info in the links.

Getting to Pula/Istria: There is only one connection from Slovenia to Pula:

:arr: https://rail.cc/en/train/ljubljana-to-pula

There are more trains operating within Istria on the part Buzet - Lupoglav - Pula but the train in the link above is the only train crossing the border SLO - HZ.

The other option to get to Pula is via Rijeka:

:arr: https://rail.cc/en/train/rijeka-to-pula

It is also possible to go from Venezia to Pula within one day; first to Rijeka:

:arr: https://rail.cc/en/train/venice-to-rijeka

Then continue with a connection from the Rijeka - Pula link.

:)

Have a look at the map here to see what the situation is like there: :arr: https://rail.cc/en/maps

Pula is quite nice I think and the train ride through Istria is beautiful as well...but it is a little bit more difficult to get there compared to Rijeka.
Rijeka itself is not that nice, but ok, and you could either go to the Opatija area close by, or to the islands of Krk/Cres. The rail route down to Rijeka is as well really nice, especially Rijeka - Zagreb if you are continuing towards Hungary.

Rijeka is an ugly industrial port city-thats the reason why it is there. IF people want to stay in that area, then nearby Opatija(which has a kind of for seniors only feel) is the choice.
That single rail line belongs to Hrvatska=Croatia and has very sparse service. Best means to go anywhere where it is nicer is by bus-from Rijeka or from Koper. Any guidebook will tell you the basic info for that area.
(in fact to say it bluntly: for just travel there IR is a waste of money-unless you also use it for the long trip there via train-expensive countries like Germany etc.
