So I was planning to buy the 10-within-22 days flexi pass for my trip through Eastern Europe, but I'm not entirely what constitutes a direct night train. For example, you can take a train from Krakow to Budapest without having to get off to change trains, but during the ride the train number changes from D 402 to R 407 to EN 477. Does this mean the 19:00 rule does not apply? I sure hope not because that would make the pass entirely useless to me.

the number of a train is not important during a travel.
it's direct train, you don't have to change train or pass on to use the 19:00 rule.
