Hi!

Next saturday, me and four friends of mine is catching a plane to Istanbul (from the very very northern Norway), and we all bought a 22-day pass. However, we have a couple of days in Istanbul before the passes is activated.

We don't want to plan too much, but our idea of a route is something like:

Istanbul - Sofia - Belgrade - Bar - (buss, rented car or whatever to:) Ploce - Mostar - Sarajevo - Zagreb - Ljublijana (and Lake Bled) - Budapest - Bratislava - Wien - Prague.

Is there anything you feel that we are missing, or do you think the route is to ambitious? Is Zagreb worth a stop, or should we maybe drop it?

Any thoughts and experiences is highly appreciated!

We've had a lot of help from these forums, but since it is the first interrail for all of us, we wanted to post the route idea for you, in hope of catching some good hints and tips.

Thank you,
F, B, M, P and J

Hej guys,

seems to be an interesting route and in my opinion enough for 22 days.

Istanbul - Sofia - Beograd :arr: https://rail.cc/en/train/istanbul-to-belgrade

Beograd - Bar: Definitely go with a day train! (We will hopefully add more info on railcc over the weekend) It is one of the most stunning rail rides in Europe including the Mala Rijeka bridge (highest in Europe).

While in Montenegro, I would recommend to go to Kotor (by bus, on the way to Ploce) and if time allows maybe to Lake Skadar and Cetinje as well - all are well connected with cheap buses as the railway network only consists of the Beograd - Podgorica - Bar main line

The rest Ploce - Zagreb - Ljubljana is easy...Zagreb is OK to go to for a day or two

Ljubljana - Budapest is best done with the day train, as the night train leaves at around 2am...

In my opinion Bratislava is not that interesting; if you want you can go there as a day trip from Wien (although night life is said to be quite nice...but it is in Budapest and Wien too).

Wien - Praha by direct EC train... :)

Maybe think about going to Graz or Salzburg too in Austria. ;)

Hope you have a nice trip! Maybe you want to add some pictures to railcc when returning. If you have more questions just ask...I'll go to bed now...
