Hi everyone,

I have been searching online for a train from Budapest - Split and every website i have found says there is no direct overnight train, but on various forums there is always someone saying that there is a direct train that is available during summer months. I cannot find any information about this for this summer.

Can anyone help?? I am hoping to travel from Budapest - Split on Sunday 14th august or Monday 15th august. The cheapest and quickest way possible!

Thanks.

Hi.
The reservation fees for Rail pass travellers are listed here:
https://rail.cc/en/train/budapest-to-split

I am not sure if the seats are free now or not?! Maybe Flow knows it.
As it is not a full train, only some wagons buy the reservation on your arrival in Budapest. But should be also available in other bordering countries like Austria, Germany, Czech Rep ... depends on where you come from to Budapest.

Peter :)

EDIT: Hetman was faster. ;)

Thank you both for replying so quickly. I don't intend on buying a rail pass as i am only going on a few journeys so decided to buy one way tickets at each stop. The price that shows for a standard seat is 26 EUR, i'm assuming this is a supplement to the actual ticket? Where could i find out the one way ticket price? (The Hznet website does not show the pricing information)

Thanks!

Hi.
The EUR 26 is a discount fare on Zagreb-Split.
You have to calculate for Budapest-Split with EUR 83 plus (if wanted) the reservation.
Maybe there are special offers available ?!?

Hi again, sorry to ask a very similar question..

Do you know if there is a train from Split - Budapest rather than the other way round? My plans have changed slightly and now need to get from Split - Budapest but can't find any information on the direct train.

Thanks,

Olivia

Hi all,

I'm trying to find a way of booking in England for the night train from Budapest to Split on Friday 4th July 2014. I can't find it anywhere. I just need to book a sleeper reservation as I've got an interrailing pass. Please help!

Thanks,

Frances

Hi Frances.
No need to double post. Thank you.
As much as I know you can only book it at railway stations in mainland Europe - and not everywhere, but definitely in Hungary. Online booking is not possible.

Hi Peter,

Is this the first year that you cannot book the summer night train from Budapest to Split online.

I saw that you could book it online in 2013, but it doesnt seem to be available in 2014?

Do you know if it is actually running again this year? Is there a timetable where it's published?

Thanks in advance,

Darren

Hi Darren,

the train is not bookable online and was not available online last year as well as far as I know. You could only book a ticket online in the shop provided by ACP but I recommend to do so locally in Budapest since you will then get a 60% discount on a return ticket. Reservations are only available at stations though.

Hello.

I plan to travel through Europe with an Interrail 10 days in 22 pass from the 9th-30th July 2014. I have planned with some detail my itinerary already but have found myself in a quandary with regards to this particular train.

From the railcc website and my own research I know that the train only runs in the Summer and, most importantly, only on a Tuesday and Friday. With this in mind, I intend to board this train on the Tuesday of the 29th July to arrive in Split in the morning on the 30th July. This coincides with both my tenth and final travel day as well as the 22nd and final valid day of my pass. I thus aim to be in Hungary (likely Budapest) at least a day before I am due to board this train.

However, I have noticed that this night train departs from Budapest at approximately 18:00 which means my journey would take up two travel days since it does not fall within the 19:00+ rule. To circumvent this I have planned to get either the bus or train (without presenting my Interrail pass) to the journey's third stop - 'Székesfehérvár' - prior to boarding the train here when it passes through at approximately 19:13 (as per railcc's guide). This, ideally, would fall within Interrail's 19:00+ rule and allow me to use only 1 of my 10 travel days as opposed to 2 if I board instead from Budapest.

Four questions:
1) Is it possible to circumvent the 19:00+ rule on night trains which depart from their first stop prior to 19:00 by boarding the train after 19:00 at a later stop?
2) With specific reference to the Budapest/Split night train, is it actually possible to board at any of the eleven or so stops between Budapest Keleti and Split's main station?
3) If so, would I have to reserve a ticket specifically catered for boarding from Székesfehérvár or would I instead purchase a general reservation on the Budapest/Split night train which makes no mention of where I will board?
4) The railcc website says that a standard SEAT reservation (on top of my Interrail provided ticket) costs a EUR3.50 supplement. Does this remain the case? And, if I so wish (with acknowledgement of the potential discomfort), would I be able to sleep on the train with this EUR3.50 seat reservation?

Many thanks for the upkeep of such a helpful resource. I hope someone can help.

1.yes, has been told here 12345 times-just but local ticket BP-Szfehervar, no need to use train before.
2.yes, but for the sleepers only to cover the overnight sector-seats anytime, anyone, and will happen-thieves included
4.have you ever slept already on trains before? then you will know the answer

1) No, you should buy either a) a ticket with international tariff Budapest - Szekesfehervar with which you can use the night train and make use of the 1900 rule from Szekesfehervar or b) a ticket with domestic tariff for another train with which you arrive in Szekesfehervar prior to the night train and then chagne there to the night train. MAV (Hungarian Railways) does not like combinations of domestic and international tariff used for a ride on the same train (in your case without changing trains in Szekesfehervar).
2) Yes.
3) Depends as explained above. If you board the night train at Sezeksfehervar get a reservation from there. If you would have a reservation from Budapest but enter the train at Szekesfehervar it would be void, officially.
4) Yes - personally, I would invest the little money to get a bed in a couchette (or sleeper).

Hi,

Just wondering if there still exists an overnight train from split to Budapest which is direct?

I'm finding it difficult to find anything myself.

If there is nothing direct, what is the closest to direct we can get? We will be travelling around the 30th July but this date is flexible

Thank you

Thank you very much

The 2 bed sleeper that is priced at 21€ - this is a supplement in top of the interrailing pass, is that right?

Is that €21 per person or is that the total price for the sleeper?

Is the only way to book these tickets when we arrive in split as I am aware it can't be done online

Thank you again

21€ is the reservation fee, for InterRail ticket holders as well as for regular tickets. Reservation fares are always per person.

You can make the reservation only at stations, yes; but not only in Split but also at stations in other mainland European countries (for instance here in Austria).

Thank you flow

I have just one more question - must we pay more for the sleeper on top of the €21 reservation fee or is that all we need to pay when we have an interrailing ticket?

As you can see in the link there are different prices for the different categories - 21€ is for a double sleeper, nothing to pay extra (however the reservation price will be 30% higher outside of Croatia and Hungary, so 30€ if bought in Germany or Austria for example).
