Hi all,
We are planning to do an Interrailtrip this summer. We have a global 10/21 pass.
Day 1 Koblenz - Luzern (00:41-08:05 CityNightLine) (travelday 1)
After arriving in Luzern we will take a scenic train to Italy. We will probably do this (thanks for your advice a few ago:))
via the Gotthard route: Luzern - Göschenen - Airolo - Bellinzona and then to Locarno (at Lago Maggiore). Then go with the Centovalli Railway to Domodossola but this is not yet sure, depends on where we'll sleep.
Don't know yet where we are staying for the night (Domodossola, Lago Maggiore or somewhere else?). So question 1: staying at Lago Maggiore or at Domodossola? And is this traject possible in 1 day?
Day 2 Lago Maggiore - Verona - Venice (travelday 2)
We are leaving Lago Maggiore at the end of the morning, go to Verona and staying in Venice for the rest of the day and the next day.
Day 3 Venice - Salzburg
Spending the day in Venice. In the evening, nighttrain (7pm rule) to Salzburg (21:18 - 04:09) Euronight
Day 4 Austria(travelday 4)
Salzburg, we are going to do some hiking: don't know exactly, we will visit some places in northern Austria and as well around Krimml (Hohe Tauern)
At the end of the day we are going from Salzburg to Krimml.
Day 5 Austria and Liechtenstein (travelday 5)
From Austria to Saint Johann Im Pongau (liechtensteinklamm)
At the end of the day from Liechtenstein to Lake Bled.
Do we have enough time as we have 2 days for hiking in Austria and Liechtenstein (we don't have to see Salzburg)
Day 6Bled
Bled, just relaxing...
Day 7 Bled, Ljublijana, Plitvice (travelday 6)
We will take the train from 7:13 to Ljublijana, arriving there at 9:47.
Ljublijana is not a must see for us, so I guess just a bit walking around for a couple of hours should be enough?
Will do some sightseeing for a couple of hours and then take either the train to Karlovac or Zagreb. From Karlovac or Zagreb by bus.
Day 8 Plitvice
Relaxing, some hiking.
Day 9 Plitvice-Croatian Coast
We don't know where to go. The next couple of days we just want to use to relax at beaches. We were thinking about taking a bus to Zadar from Plitvice. and then the next day from Zadar to Split or an Island? If you have advice I would like to hear:)!
Day 10 Coast - Split - Ancona
We are planning to take an overnight ferry from Split to Ancona, arriving early in the morning. I guess the blueline ferry is the cheapest? Is it worth buying a ferry ticket or could we better go by train?
We have almost 2 whole days to spend at the beaches and different Islands. Is it too short or too long? Do you have any suggestion for a route, and is there a ferry from Zadar or Hvar to Ancona? Can't find it on the internet...
Day 11 Ancona-Assissi-Perugia-Firenze Travelday 7
We won't stay in Ancona but go directly to Assissi and Perugia and are planning to arrive in Firenze in the evening.
Day 12 Firenze
Sightseeing in Firenze
Day 13 Firenze-Livorno-Pisa-La Spezia (Cinque Terre) Travelday 8
From Firenze to Livorno to Pisa and in the afternoon arriving at Cinque Terre
Day 14 Cinque Terre
Walking between the villages, don't know yet where to sleep
Day 15 Cinque Terre-Genova-Monaco-Nice Travelday 9?
Day 16 Nice-Orange Travelday 9?
I think it's cheaper to use day 16 as travelday 9 instead of day 15?
One week of holiday with friends:) /b]
Last interrailday: travelday 10
From Orang to Lyon (is it worth visiting or do you have any other suggestions between Marseille and Germany?) And then heading back home.
We do like to see a lot of nature, do some hiking and so on. But we do like as well beaches and just walking around... We will camp, most of the times at campings. Is wildcamping forbidden?
If you have suggestions about the route, extra costs, what to see or what not to see and if we do have enough time I would like to hear!!
We are still thinking of putting the last two days in 1 because we only have 15 days... Or are there other places or days where we can skip something?
Thanks in advance for your help! hope that we can make up our mind so we can buy an interrailticket!!

Hi,
sorry for answering late... :os
Koblenz - Luzern: Since June there are two standars 2nd class carriages attached to the Amsterdam - Zürich CNL train (that you enter in Koblenz) on the Duisburg - Zürich leg. These can be used without a reservation - if you are comfortable with regular seats it's a good alternative.
Do you want to spend some hours in Luzern? Since the CNL does not run directly there - you would have to change at Basel or Zürich to get there. Luzern - Locarno takes 2h40 - 3h depending on the connection, at least one connection per hour.
Accomodation might be cheaper on the Italian stretch of Centovalli railway although it is not directly at Lago Maggiore anymore. Latest train Locarno - Domodossola is at 1850.
Day 2: If you want to save money avoid the ES City trains between Milano - Verona - Venezia (10€ reservation!) and use regional trains instead. Also use regional trains to get to Milano from Lago Maggiore.
Day 3: :arr: https://rail.cc/en/night-train/venice-vienna-en-236/97
Day 4: Zell am See - Krimml is operated by Pinzgauer Lokalbahn, InterRail not valid.
Day 5: A little bit overambitious. Sankt Johann im Pongau - Schaan-Vaduz (Liechtenstein) takes around 6h one way!
Day 6: How to get to Bled the best way depends where you are finally staying the day before... ;)
Day 7: Well Ljubljana is a very nice city, if you are there some hours you will see most sights anyway :)
Then Croatia...well if you are going all the way down to Split a ferry probably is the smarter idea than going all the way around the Adriatic by train. If you go to Rijeka and then one of the islands, you could go by train via Ljubljana - Venezia though
Ancona - Assisi takes 2h-3h depending on the connection; on to Perugia it's only 30 minutes, finally to Firenze it is almost 3h hours again...consider that while planning.
Firenze - Cinque Terre: Again, take care not to take IC/ES City trains if you want to avoid reservations.
Cinque Terre - Nice: :arr: https://rail.cc/en/train/rome-to-nice
Nice - Orange: Use a travel day for this, instead go Bled - Ljubljana with regular tickets. :)
Lyon is certainly worth visiting! Where do you head home?
Wild camping is forbidden everywhere you are going...but if you are at a remote place and take away all rubbish you might try in Slovenia, Croatia...
Did you already order your ticket?

Hi flo!
Thanks for your very helpful reply!! I'm still thinking about some changes in the route, but before that i have some questions ;)
We've decided to skip Verona so we are able to spend more time in Venice. That means that we are going from Switzerland (or Italy) directly to Venice (hoping to arrive there early in the morning (around 11 a.m.) so we can spend the whole day there and then going by nighttrain to Austria. As we are not sure where to spend the night (Italy or Suisse) it doesn't matter for us what kind of scenic train we'll take and where we are ending. The only thing is we would like to have a nice view ;) .
I saw Zermatt for example is very difficult with the connection to Venice. That was one of the reasons we choose for (a part of) the Wilhelm Tell traject. Do you have suggestions for a train from either Suisse or Italy to Venice without paying supplements but arriving early? Or is this impossible? Are there better scenic trains but with a good connection to Venice as well?
Second question is about Austria: We would like to go to St. Johan im Pongau but we are wondering what else to visit. We want to see nature in Austria, so Krimml or Salzkammergut are both an option. What would you recommend?
Thanks again!!
Haven't bought our tickets yet, but will do it this week or next week at railcc :) !

Hi!
If you want to save money (and only get one 10€ reservation) I recommend the following train:
Luzern 0818 - 1510 Venezia Santa Lucia :arr: EC, 10€ reservation
This runs via the Gotthard route (as does Wilhelm Tell Express) which is quite nice with many mountain views. :)
You see it is a quite long trip...there is a connection one hour earlier as well but it requires a change of trains in Milano and thus two 10€ reservations.
Other scenic routes are narrow gauge and with much longer travel time.
Krimml is much easier to go to from St Johann (2h20) although you will have to pay for Zell am See - Krimml; to the Salzkammergut (3h to Bad Ischl) you can go the whole way with your InterRail ticket.
It also depends on where you are heading afterwards (and if you want to go during day or night) what is better to go to.
Thanks for supporting our work! :)
