Hi everyone,
My friend and I are planning to go to Italy on 10th-12th july. We are in Toulouse, France. We consider buying Italy InterRail for 3 days which costs 115 euros. But we don't really understand how it works.
We plan to visit Rome, Milan, Turin, Venise and Florence in 3 days. Among these cities, Rome is the most important, so we want to be in Rom for 2 days with only 1 night at hotel in Rome.We need to take night trains to Rome and other cities too. So that, we can visit them during day time. I read on the website of InterRail about 7 pm rule. They say that i leave France after 7:00 pm and i arrive before 4 am, the next day will be counted as 1 day of InterRail. To be honest, i don't really understand about this.
As we are going from Toulouse, so what are the best ways to organize this 3 day trip? Do we need to stop at Ventimiglia first or go directly? In short, may you please show us the best ways to take the most advantage of this Pass without spending much on hotel? Hope we can enjoy a lot during these 3 days.
Thanks in advance

Hi Pkph.
You can NOT use the InterRail ONE Country Pass in France.
You do not get any discounts in France.
You have to pay a normal price ticket until the border at Ventimiglia.
The 1900h rule for night trains says: if you enter a night train after 1900h in the evening and you are travelling at least until 0400h in the morning or longer, it counts as only one travel day.
Of course you can use only night trains in Italy with your One Country Pass Italy.
More details here:

Pay attention to high speed trains in Italy for which you need an extra reservation:

bien sure, monsieur/madame, your plan does not make much sense.
You state to have 3 days-want to visit 4 cities and stay in Roma for 2 out of those 3??
ALL long-dist trains in It must be reserved-including all IC and ICN. But this only means paying 3-4 €extra per trip. You had better book asap PREM on SNCF for TEOZ Tlse->Nice/Ventimigila-the cheapest option. I really doubt if this IR for only It makes much sense for you-but first think it over.

Thanks for your response.
I still have one question. I already checked the website of SNCF. The last train to Vingtimillia arrives at around 23:30 and the first train leaving from Vingitimillia leaves at 4:30 AM. If we arrive at Vingtimillia at 23:30, it means that we have to stay at the train station until 4:30 AM to catch the first train to Milan or other cities in Italy. To be honest, we don't know about security at the station and we are not sure whether it is closed at night or not. We don't want to spend one night at Nice at all.
Based on this point, could you please give us some advices.
Thanks

Take the Lunéa Tolouse - Nice and continue to Vintimille with TER. Arrival around noon - then continue with your InterRail pass. :)

When we arrive at Vingtimillia around noon and then arrive at Milan in the evening. We already lose 1 day for InterRail Pass just for sitting in the train.
Can we take direct train to Milan without stopping at Vingtimillia?
For example that my pass valid from 1st july.
Below is the details of direct train from Toulouse - Milan:
Toulouse (15h48) - Lyon (19h46)
Lyon (20h22) - Dijon Ville (22h24)
Dijon Ville (23h21) - Milan (5h38)
My big question is the validity of interRail from Dijon ville. When we take train from Dijon Ville at 23h:21 (30th june) to Milan, can i use my pass?
To be honest, interRail is complicated. When i went to ask SNCF, i didn't get clear response.

I would like to emphasize the same question. Is Ventimiglia train station closed at night?

I think it will be closed for some hours (between last and first train).
You probably are not going to like the option via Dijon - Milano since it is a night train with compulsory reservation:
