Hi,
I am travelling through Interrail for the first time and am totally confused. The Inter rail pass says that you cannot travel in the country of your residence. Does that mean that I have to pay some supplements when I travel from London?

I have got the 5 out of 10 day inter rail pass. I intend to travel to Amsterdam from London, stay there for 2 days, then to Freiburg (Germany), stay there for 3 days, from Freiburg to Zurich stay there for 2 days and then back to London.

I would be very grateful if you could help me out. I would like to know if I need any reservations on the trains other than the Inter rail pass. It would be a massive massive favour.

Thanks.

Hi!

It is correct that you can not travel with InterRail in your country of residence. If you are from London, you have three possibilities of reaching the continent:

If you choose to go by ferry you will have to get a regular ticket for London - Dover/Harwich plus the ferry ticket. As soon as you arrive in Calais/Hook van Holland you can use your InterRail ticket to get to Amsterdam.
If you want to go with Eurostar it is best to get a regular ticket as well. There is a special fare for InterRail pass holders available but you often get cheaper regular tickets when booked some time in advance. From Bruxelles you then continue with your InterRail ticket.

Amsterdam - Freiburg is free of supplements/reservations. There are several direct ICE trains which run at 300 km/h between Köln and Frankfurt. If you want you could also change at Köln and go via the classic route along the Rhine valley which is very scenic but takes longer than the direct ICE.

Freiburg - Zürich is again free of sup/res; frequent connections available.

Zürich - Paris: Either with direct fast TGV (up to 320 km/h) but with 8€ reservation. Or slower without reservation via Mulhouse - Troyes which is again a quite scenic route.
