Hey!

I've been dreaming of doing interrail for years and finally i have a free summer and money and time to do it.

I am really interested in going from Vienna to Istanbul, but as I dont know much about eastern Europe I am unsure of what route to take..
there are many possibilities and I am wondering if anyone here has taken any of those routes and if you have any suggestions?

Also, feel free to suggest things I cant miss!!

Thanks :)

Sophia

i didnt travel on that route but i live in Istanbul and i know that there is an economic crysis in Greece and they have closed their international railways (they didnt stop domestic railways) so i suggest you to come over passing through Republic of Bulgaria to Istanbul...

Hi Sophia.

You have different options - but skip the route via Italy and a ferry to Greece then to Turkey like Smmugler already said: no trains in Greece for now.

As you are talking about Eastern Europe, think about a route like this:

Vienna - Budapest - Belgrade - Sofia - Istanbul ... the most direct one.

Other options:
Vienna - Prague - Krakow - Budapest - Bucharest - Istanbul ... which I recommend, as it is an interesting one.

Details and connections are in the country topics:

there are basically-if you really want to start out from Wien-2 routes-the main trains follow the same:
via Hungary-Serbije-Bulgaria-Turkiye
OR after Hungary via Romania-then into BUlg-and rejoin 1.
With IR you can of course make as many detours or sidetrips as you want or are able to cram in.
Neither of these 2 routes is very quick, the trains are mostly old and decrepit and via Serbije you will have enormous delays all the time.
Read a guidebook as to what these countreis have to offer and if that is what you want to see.
