Hi, can i first apologise if this question has already been asked (and answered!) -
but, we have a one month interrail pass and i'm a bit confused: do we need to validate our ticket at the station before boarding each train? we are going to france, germany, austria, italy and spain.

i'm worrying because I know you can be fined if you don't validate your ticket so i just want to make sure before we go. thank you, kate :|

Hi Kate!

No, you dont have to validate your ticket. When purchasing the ticket you have to enter the first day of validity (you already have done this). Now, it is enough to just board the train and then enter the train timings (origin and destination stations plus departure and arrival) on the travel report sheet that is attached to your pass. No need to validate your InterRail pass at a machine or a counter at a station. :)

However, keep in mind that you will have to get additional reservations for certain trains. An overview can be found here :arr: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation

France: TGV, TEOZ and Thalys need extra reservations
Germany: TGV/ICE to/from Germany need reservations as well as ICE Sprinter; all other ICE, IC, EC,... trains do not need a reservation
Austria: No reservations needed
Italy: Reservation (10€) needed for AV, ES trains; reservation (3€) recommended for IC, E, ICN trains
Spain: Reservatin (10€) needed for AVE and Avant; reservation (6,50€) needed for Alaris, Alvia, Euromed, Arco, Talgo; reservation (4€) needed for certain regional trains such as MD, R598,...
Also, for night trains you need a reservation for couchette and sleeper accomodation, often as well for regular seats. Details for night trains can be found in the country boards.
