I'm really sorry if this is one of the obvious questions that newbies always ask.

I'll be getting the Warsaw - Budapest sleeper train. In the thread in the country forum there are prices listed - I thought all trains with the Interrail ticket are free?

Hi.

Have a look at the step by step guide explaining a little bit all Interrail details: https://rail.cc/en/first-time-interrail

Reservation fees for night trains: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train

Free connections: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route

And unfortunately not all trains are free and included in InterRail. This would really be a dream to have a one month rail pass, travel all over Europe and at the same time sleep for free for only ~ EUR 400. :)
But the reality is: for a night train you have to pay like for a bed in a hostel. You have different categories and some night trains offer free 2nd class seats.

For some special hight speed trains you have to pay as well extra. Why? These railway companies don't really earn money by filling up their trains with travellers on global rail tickets.

I hope this answer will help you understanding it a little bit better.
Have sunny travel days, Peter :)

That WAS how IR staretd-39 years ago-and for about 400 DEM at that time (about 200€)-and with such awful lots of pretty swedish girls sleeping in many more trains across Yugoslavia to Greece etc, that then the IR-dream ws born. And bit by bit most of those things were abandoned.

Most hi speed trains are run by the state-owned national rail systems (like SNCF or FS in FR or IT). But the days that they did not have to look after money are long, long gone. And they all require reservations-as no standees are allowed
