Hi,
Is it essential to bring a printout of your conformation email to hostels you book? Or will the reference number suffice? I ask because I'm guessing it may be hard to come by printers once on the road, as it were. I'm sure I'm not the first to ask this question, but I can't immediately see the answer anywhere.

Now it's my turn answering your question as Flow is currently travelling as well. :)
In my experience the name and the orderID are enough - in most cases I had the printout with me, but I also checked in only giving them my name.
Only for the case they don't believe you booked (I think it won't happen), log in your email account on their computer and show your confirmation.

i made reservations on booking.com with 1 card

There it is no problem to pay the booking fee online by credit card and the rest in the hostel either by cash, the same or an other credit card.
I think it is everywhere the same. So you can relax... :)
