Hi!
Yes, direct EC trains require a reservation, it should be 10€ nowadays.
If you dont want to spend that money, there are several R and IC trains throughout the day to Domodossola on the Italian side of Simplon tunnel. From there you can continue to Milano with regional trains. If you have enough time you could go from Domodossola via the Centovalli railway to Locarno and from there to Milano. This could be a nice day trip.
Milano - Roma is served at least by one, usually two fast AV trains which require 10€ reservation again. Regular price is 91€ by the way... You probably dont find connections because you are searching after the 12th June, when the timetable gets updated.
You will get the reservations at railway stations in Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Germany,... For travel within Italy it should be also possible online :arr: https://rail.cc/en/italy-train-supplement-online-booking/f2949

We are travelling from Geneva to Milan that day - we were going to go Geneva - Brig and then Brig to Milan a bit later but is there a better way do you think?

Certainly the best connection if you want to go directly to Milano:
Geneve 1036 - 1302 Brig
Brig 1320 - 1349 Domodossola
Domodossola 1402 - 1613 Milano Porta Garibaldi
But like I've said, if you want to invest a little more time you might think going via Centovalli railway:
Geneve 1036 - 1302 Brig
Brig 1320 - 1349 Domodossola
Domodossola 1405 - 1552 Locarno FART :arr: this is the station of the local railway at the station forecourt of the SBB station
Locarno 1603 - 1622 Giubiasco
Giubiasco 1641 - 1737 Chiasso
Chiasso 1747 - 1852 Milano Porta Garibaldi
This is a a little bit adventurous but the scenery along the Centovalli as well as on the remainder until Chiasso is rather nice :arr: http://www.google.at/search?hl=de&client=firefox-a&hs=PqC&rls=org.mozilla%3Ade%3Aofficial&biw=1920&bih=887&site=search&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=centovalli+bahn&aq=0&aqi=g1&aql=&oq=centovalli+

Yes it is all free. :) Scenery is nice all the way...from Genève sit on the right side of the train if you want to have nice views of Lac Léman.
MAybe you also find an earlier connection from Genève to some place along the Centovalli line to make a short stopover in a small village and then continue as described to Milano.
