Hi!

Unfortunately, it seems that currently no rail service is available on the Petit Train Jaune until further notice. This probably is due to construction works...as soon as I have further info I will update the forum topic but for your trip I'd look for an alternative connection. :|

EDIT: official information :arr: http://telechargement.ter-sncf.com/Images/Languedoc_Roussillon/Tridion/VVB-LTL_avril_tcm-22-59967.pdf

If you need help with this just let me know.

I think so, yes.

As far as I am informed, SNCF has decided to keep the line and improve it instead of closing it. For the high season in summer services should be running as usual again. :)

Hello all,

I'm new to this Europe-by-rail stuff, but have been doing extensive research and I think I'm getting the hang of it. However, I have run into a snag in my family travel plans and I cannot seem to find clear information anywhere on the internet.

Here's my problem/issue: My family of 6 are traveling from Barcelona to Paris on 19/6/2011. We have already secured reservations on the Corail Lunea overnight train from Perpignan to Paris. However, we've been waiting for weeks now for the evening connection from Barcelona to Perpignan to open for reservations (Talgo 460). Well ... It appears that the train did open for reservation seats this past weekend, but by the time I contacted RE this morning, the entire train for our journey day had been completely sold out. (So much for RE's promise to automatically secure non-confirmed seats on the day that a reservation opens up in the system -- they didn't do it, and now I am out of luck.)

I'm looking at using the Le Petit Jaune journey as an alternative way to get from Barcelona to Perpignan. However, can someone help with the following:

1.) There is conflicting information indicating that this line (LaTour de Carol -- Vernet les Bains) is not running. As best as I can tell, however, it appears that TER intends to bring it back on-line at the end of May. Can anyone confirm that the Le Petit Train (in particular, the RE 23012 leaving at 3pm) will be up an running on June 19th?

2.) The regional Rodalies de Catalunya timetable only shows the R3 line running through June 9th. Is this just the product of a short posted schedule window, or is there actually some risk that the R3 line from Barcelona to LaTour de Carol will not be running on June 19th?

3.) Is my understanding correct that there are no reservations or supplements for these two segments and that our Eurail Select passes will be all we need to board both of these trains? Is there any chance that we would be denied boarding (with our luggage) due to overcrowding?

I'd appreciate any help a more experienced member can provide for me.

Hi.
Why did you tried to book your reservation at RE? Do it the direct way at the Spanish national railway company. No commission and up to date information.
Do it the way like it is described here for Spain:
https://rail.cc/en/spain-renfe-online-reservation-how-to/f4995

But I definitely recommend you the rout trough the Pyrenees. It is an amazing nature - one of the most interesting train journeys within Europe. :)

To your questions:

1) The RE 23012 is definitely running on the 19/06/2011

2) The schedules are only online one month in advance. So you will have to wait some days until you can select the 19th.
But this train will run!
http://www.renfe.com/EN/viajeros/cercanias/barcelona/index.html
Select as departure station: BARCELONA SANT ANDREU ARENAL
And as destination: LA TOUR DE CAROL

3) Both trains are free of any extra fees. No reservation required.
There is always enough space on these two trains. I travelled this route a lot of times and they were never overcrowded.

Relax and enjoy your trip.

Peter :)

Would there be a train to Toulouse the day after that will only be announced a month before?

Thank you very much for the quick reply, Peter.

You mention that we should depart out of Barcelona-Sant Andreu Arenal ... Is there a reason we should avoid picking up the R3 train out of the main Barcelona-Sants station? (The current schedule in the Rodalies site shows them 4 stops apart, with about 15 minutes duration between them.)

I also discovered (since I wrote my original post) that it appears we do have another viable option (not divulged to me by the RE representative). I think we can take the evening R11 Rodalies regional train out of Barcelona to PortBou. If we pick the correct train, a few of them appear to have thru-service past PoutBou to the French Cerbere station on the other side of the border. From there, I believe we can pick up a local TER train from Cerbere to Perpignan. Am I correct with this assessment? I'm still leaning toward taking the scenic route through the mountains, but it is nice to have a backup plan.

One more question ... If we take the regional train from Barcelona to Cerbere, would they let us board the Lunea night train in Cerbere, even if our sleeper car reservation is set to have us board the train at the next stop (Perpignan)?

FYI: We set up the seat reservations through RE because they were offering a nice promotion for the purchase of our passes -- which ended up saving us several hundred dollars. Our seat reservations are taking us from Madrid-to-Barcelona-to-Paris-to-Switzerland, so it was reassuring to me (as a novice) to get them all done in one place ... or so I thought. I was not aware that I was paying a surcharge. Shipping is free because our order is large.

Hi.
You can also start in Barcelona Sants - no problem. Just used the mentioned station as the systems sometimes doesn't accept Barcelona Sants.
And yes there are regional trains available via PortBou. It looks like you already picket the correct information.
Then connecting to Cerbere.
Concerning your night train reservation: it shouldn't be a problem to enter the train already in Cerbere instead of Perpignan, as the reservation fee is the same and the beds are already ready to use when the train starts in Cerbere.
The best is to consult the company where you bought the reservations.
Have sunny travel days, Peter

maybe-check the site at www.ter-sncf.com -then look for the right region in the map. (this is not clearly on the main sncf website). The Fr have a good record of strikes and late ending works. In fact that SNCF decides nothing-the regions pay for it and order.
