Sorry for the pompous title, I just finished the same thing for India, and am re-using the project name. If this is in the wrong place just move me or tell me to post it somewhere else.
The idea is to go to the most northern, eastern, southern and western parts of Europe, as quickly as is possible, by train obviously. By Europe I mean that we're restricting to what the InterRail pass offers. So we can save the run to Kars, and all the Russian stuff, for another mission. So I make those points Narvik, Istanbul, Pozzalo and Cascais, unless you know different.
I've come up with the itinerary below. Note the start date, I like to plan things well in advance and give people time to have some input and clear their desks so they can join in. We might go for next year, but my wife might divorce me if I pull that stunt, I've only just got back from India. There is some inevitable/accidental time for sightseeing, but there are no prisoners taken on that score. I think getting it done on a 15 day pass is pretty good work. I have though squeezed in the Bernina. I hammered an 8 day swiss pass a few years back, it's difficult to pick a favourite in Switzerland, but Tirano to Chur has to be gob smacking by anyone's standards. We should though get to have a beer in 14 capital cities, plus a load of others, e.g all day in Istanbul.
Not including the eurostar if you are coming from London (else just go Paris-Paris), the whole ticket including reservations and supplements is coming in at about £800 or just over 900 euros. I think the bus fare from Fauske to Narvik is about another 50 euros, I managed to get 17 people to come round India, and I reckon we'll beat that for this, so we could just end up hiring a bus to do Narvik. the idea is to hit there on the summer solstice. That will be the only night not on the train.
